like redlining 1st gear and skipping 2nd going straight to 3rd or downshifting from like 5th to 3rd

 

I'm sure its not bad if you do it a few times or anything...

...but WHY would you do that?

maybe you redlined 1st to cause you had to beat the guy next to u to merge...and after u redlined u just wanted to cruise in third...and u dont want it in 2nd gear cause teh revs will still be high so you throw it into 3rd

yup yup exactly

 

i from 1st to 3rd to 5th all the time, shifting below 3k tho. if ur just chillin its better than goin through all 5

 

Upshifting is fine. Just don't do it too often. If you're going to skip a gear, might aswell go into the gear for a splt second, then go to the next higher gear. So, you're in 3rd, shift to 4th for a fraction of a second and let your RPMs go up a little, then shift again into 5th.

Downshifting you're fine aswell, as long as you match your RPMs. Don't just go from 5th to 3rd and drop the clutch. That puts extensive wear on your clutch components. Rev a little higher and then when the RPMs go up, start to depress the clutch.

Why would it make any difference how often you do it? The car(ecu) doesn't know what gears you're skipping, it only knows what your RPMs are.

 

Yes, it is bad to skip gears.

I don't have the service bulletin in front of me, but will hurt your tranny in the long run.

And why do you want to do that, thats a ricer thing to do!!!

 

As long as your rpm is good enough to be in 3rd easily, y not?

he must have his reasons..

i skip gears all the time, 2nd to 4th, and i downshift to save my *** and my brakes when going through twisties 3rd to 2nd all the time, and when im really hard on the brakes i go 4th to 2nd, good method of slowing down, i've never had a problem with doing this -in the 3 hondas that ive owned- ..no premature clutch wear, no odd flywheel wear, no transmission problems

for those that dont know or dont have experience, WHY post?

how do you figure??
it takes a lot of abuse such as clutchless shifting and power shifting to do damage like that.

rev matching is a completely different story, you get your engine speed to an estimate of what i would be at that speed in that gear while easing the clutch out, it helps your transmission take the decelleration

can u plz explain how thats a ricer thing to do. but to every1 else that actually had some good input, thanx. n when i do downshift i make sure to match the revs.

Come on, I won't believe this BS until I see a report from honda themselves... come on, thats basically saying having longer gears makes your transmission go bad...

 

Transmissions are sycronized for a reason, its fine i have never had a prob doing it in my daily drivers

 

But would you have enough speed after 1st gear to go into 3rd without bogging the car?

 

i skip gears sometimes when i'm going down a hill (2nd to 4th). i rather do it sometimes because my 3rd gear grinds. i haven't noticed a problem by me doing this.

 

I would avoid skipping gears ESPECIALLY if you do high rpm shifting.

Skipping gears essentially makes your syncros work that much harder, to spin that much faster to mesh up to the speed of the lower gear. If anything, go to 2nd, then go to 3rd. If you want to be lazy, drive an automatic that day.

Yes and the reason is to prevent your gears from grinding. BUT syncros are brass and are designed to wear. By skipping gears, you are wearing them out faster leading to premature failure.

You better believe it. Longer gears don't have to do with shifting at all.

 

The only time i skip gears is when i see a cop and i shift from like 3 to 5th so it doesnt make to much noise you know and they wont stop me for stupid reason .but i dont think its a problem

 

If you read what I posted before, you would now realize that it is a long term problem. Keyword, LONG TERM.

 

haven't had a problem skipping gears. *knock on wood*
