Default Transmission problem that just came out of nowhere...

I drive a 99 Civic Si. Car was running fine as of last night. I'm out for a drive this morning and im doin about 60 on the highway in 5th gear. All of a sudden it goes out of 5th into neutral. I put it back in 5th and its fine. I figure whatever. Then it continuosly hapens. I can't drive 2 minutes without it throwin the shifter into neutral. After bout 10 minutes of this problem, all of a sudden i hear a loud grinding type of noise, and im in neutral. I pull the car over, look everythin over and everything is fine externally. Axles, mounts, etc, everything is fine. I get back in the car and decide to see if it drives. I put it in first and it starts goin fine but with a clicking noise. I figured whatever i had to get home. So i shift to 2nd and its fine, then it wont engage into 3rd at all. It wont even let me throw it into 3rd so i skip to 4th. 4th works but makes a continous noise also with the engine speed. Then i go to fifth and it grinds into it and then makes a LOUD continuous noise. So basically i drove home in 4th gear. Does this mean my transmission went out on me? Is it ok to drive even though i have no 3rd and 5th?

you are low on tranny fluid. this happens when teh 5th gear bearing doesnt get oil. if you dont put fluid in it soon, you will smoke that bearing and it will cost alot to fix. to fill it up, there is either a 14mm or 17 mm bolt that is right next to your passenger side axle shaft. remove that plug and get a funnel with a long hose on it and stab it into the fill hole. now just put 5w30 oil into it slowly until you see it coming out of the fill hole your hose is in. then plug it back up and go. that should fix the problem.

sounds like your bearing/s took a dookie.
the bearing play is making the shaft ''walk'', thus making it pop out of gear

describe the noise better

just replaced the tranny fluid less than a week ago. It's definately full. Used Honda MTF.

It sounds like something is clicking as i accelerate. Almost like something is broken and moving around and the faster i go, the faster the sound gets. If it was fluid, why would only 3rd and 5th gear go?

You might wanna re-check to make sure it still is full....this really smacks of no/low fluid.

if it is the fluid(which i seriously doubt), the damage has already been done correct? It's not like im just gonna be able to put fluid back in it and all of a sudden 3rd gear is going to engage without any problems.

the general rule is if the noise is rpm or speed related its either bearings or speed gears. Drain the fluid and inspect it silver shaves would be bearings and metal peices are gears. Either way you need to rebuild it.

Nah if he drains it there will be no shavings in it... there is a magnet on the bottom of the s4 tranny. I thought the same thing, drained it seen no metal... so I opened it and seen the tons of metal stuck the the magnet on the bottom.

Opened the tranny up and check things out. Bearings are getting play.
