did first oil change on b16, smelled like gas in the oil?
i just put about 2500 miles on my newly installed b16 i noticed it smelled kinda like gas. i used valvolin 10w30 durablend and i have never use any type of synthetic. is this normal? if not then whats wrong?
i don't know if this would matter, but for the first week or two my MAP and IAC didn't work. could that have caused my engine to run rich or is it something else?
1. How does a MAP not work and you drive the car??
2. What ECU do you have?
3. What Chip is it, who tuned it and what was it tuned for??
4. What injectors do you have?
5. What is your FP??
6. How many O2 are you running, and on which cylinders are they hooked up?? What I mean is is it like stock, where one O2 is on pipes connetting the #1 & 4 and the other is on pipes # 2 & 3??? Very important
7. A lso did you connect the two o2 wires into one o2??
8. Is the oil like Black Black kind of wattery??
That should cover all the questions....

one or more of the rings may be seized up or they may be worn . also you need to use 5w30 or that swhat honda wants you use in it.
1. i don't know, it threw a code for map and iac but it ran.
2. pw0
3. its not chipped
4. stock b16 injectors
5. ?? ( not sure what this is put it is probably stock)
6. 2 oxygen sensors, stock b16 location
7. no, i used the hasport harness so i have both of them
8. yes, it was black and a little thin. what does that mean?
basically its a stock b16, only mod is an air intake

Well if your ECU threw a code for the MAP and the IAC then I would first take the IAC out and clean that sucker with Brake cleaner. Just clean all the carbon off of it really good.
Check your vacuum lines from the TB to the MAP sensor, to make sure there is no breaks on the line. If there is a break then that would explain your code.
From your discription everything seems fine to me IMO. Oil will be black but the black & thin I was talking about is like water almost.
Use some fuel injector cleaner and just clean out your fuel system. Get some Sea foam to do that and your engine as well. I heard it's good stuff, just used some on my buddy's ITR last week.
Change the oil and keep checking the color of it every week to see what it does, if your running rich then the oil will turn black fast.
Hope that helps

hey heres an Idea since no one uses their brains.
When you started the car up for the first time ever did you whatsoever have any problems getting it started, meaning a few times you had to sit and crank crank crank???
gas will last in your oil for quite a while, when a car is flooded its always a good idea to change the oil after you get it running and that is prob. the same case as your car, it wasnt flooded but if you had to at all crank the car over a given period of time over and over then I gurantee you thats it.
Check for gas at the next oil change, monitor your fuel mileage. and if its burning gas then YOU WILL KNOW IT. keep in mind the engine prob. sat in a junkyard for ever, gas left over in the intake manifold/injectors fuel rail and such let gravity take its course and saturated teh cylinder walls with gas and other areas of the engines, you engine prob. hasnt completley burned it all out yet, that is to say unless your oil is like water and it smells really really gassy.
BTW Id highly recomend you use 5w30 I use mobil 5w30 regular oil and change it on time usually every 2500 to 3000. You dont need 10w30 and you dont need synthetic not in our cars.....unless your burning oil, then you should have rebuilt the engine while it was out.
(*not to say you knew it was oging to burn oil, just saying) lol

I use Mobil 1 synthic oil 10w30 on my B16. (after the 1000miles break-in of cause)

Why do you guys use 10w30? I used 10w30 on my dx becuase yeah it burned liek a quart a week, but if your engine is running sound then use 5w30, using higher viscosity oil can get thicker and foam up as oil often does when you over fill an engine, IMO from seeing it in other vehicles (customer cars) it can cause premature gasket failure and less lubrication.
I guess all Im saying is if your engine is running soundly then put 5w30 in it, thats what honda recomends....lol it saysi t right on your emission/displacement sticker in your engine bay.
but then again its your cars and it wont hurt my feelings....lol I was just throwing in my 2 cents.

thanks for the input
the reason i had a map code was because it was delivered with a crushed sensor (probably happened during shipping) and i had the IAC code because i didn't see it back there so it just wasn't hooked up. all that is cool now and i don't have ANY codes.
i was hoping it had something to do with it being a used engine and just sitting around for a while so hopefully thats all it is. ill just change my oil often and see what it looks like.
as for my choise of oil. i was told to use synthetic by alot of people, put im too cheap so i bought durablend. as for using 10w30, i was told to use that in the summer and 5W30 in the winter. i can't beleive it makes that big of a difference.

i personally run 5w30 mobil 1 every oil change. people say that its not necesarry but id rather use it, its cleaner and doesnt have the imperfections that crude oil has.

HEAT....don't remind me. No A/C in the CRX sucks during traffic jams and the Rain.
It's not just hot it's the humidity, I mean the sun is out blazing. Then all of a sudden it starts to rain. Then it stops and the sun is out again so it's now like a sauna. I don't know how I survived this long here.
coot_er glad you fixed you engine codes man.
