straight pipe question
I have a straight pipe from the header (stock) to my muffler (stock)...What am I gaining and losing? And how would that compare with me having a carsound or some other "high flow" cat?
Gain = noise, pollution, in car fumes.......
Loss = a little torque below say 3500 rpm.
Now if you decide to spray, run the test pipe! I picked up .35 in the 1/4 mile just buy using a $10 test pipe made from parts at Autozone.
14.05 to 13.70 on a SOHC

with drivers window down about 1/3, the exhaust flows back in through the open window. With the cat on, you don't smell it.
Nothing like showing up for a date smelling like exhaust.

It's not worth it in an N/A car but it has some gains on a turbo application. You will pass inspection unless the guy inspecting it looks under your car. You will definitlely fail emissions though unless you put it back on.

you can run a resonated straight pipe. It's basically a glass-pack in place of your cat. Running one will cut down on the loud ricey sound levels & at the same time free up exhaust flow restriction.
Some people say that running a str8 pipe is useless on a naturally aspirated engine (all motor), I beg to differ..
I just recently had to get a smog check so I went and got a bolt-on high flow cat...I dont know if people speak from experience when they say on n/a its useless but they are wrong...After I put the cat on..the car was not only slower...but also more sluggish..not as responsive...took it back off after the smog check...you can actually feel the diff in pull and responsiveness.
