I've got a 95 Civic EX, and I'm having some problems with it, I just put in a new master cylinder and when I push the clutch down to put it in gear sometimes its really hard to go, especially in reverse, I'll have the clutch to the floor and when I go to put it in reverse it sounds like the gears are grinding for a split second, and putting it into like first gear sometimes it just won't go, all I have to do is take my foot off the clutch and press it again and it'll go just fine... but there has to be something wrong with it, I'm thinking I didn't bleed all of the air out good enough when I put in the new master cylinder... just a thought...
does anyone have any ideas?

im havin the same crap happen, only it does it in reverse. Sometimes it wont go in gear and it just slipe or grinds real bad, but sometimes it goes in and works. awkward.

 

To properly release all air out of the clutch lines, you need 2 people. So get your friend or your dad.

Have you or your friend crack open the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder.
Press down on the clutch and leave it to the floor.
Tighten the bleeder screw again (if you don't, air would suck up when you release the clutch).
Release your clutch pedal and let it build pressure.

Repeat a few times until you can feel enough pressure on your clutch pedal.

BTW, the best thing you can do so it won'r grind in Reverse is, put it in 5th gear BEFORE you place it in Reverse. I never grind after I started going 5th-Reverse. Just place it in 5th, take it out of gear as in going to Neutral, pop it in Reverse. Don't go 5th and straight down to Reverse.

 

damn, your good man...how did you figure this out? Yours does this now too? There is no way to fix it...so i can just go directly into reverse?

 

Most Honda transmissions I've driven and seen all do this. I believe even in the Car Manual is states to go into gear before you go into Reverse. If I do it slow enough, I won't grind going directly to Reverse. But I rather not take the chance and just slip into 5th then Reverse.

I have that proplem too, what i do is put it into first and move forward about 6 inches or so just to get the gears moving a bit and then shift into reverse. You wont grind gears or anything this way as long as you go slow and just a bit of movement. Your just trying to align the gears since the syncros are messed up im guessing.

 

i always do third then reverse, it's much faster i think that going from 5th because there is a lock out from 5th to rev. meaning you have to go into neutral 1st. 3rd just goes straight in

also, you can use a vacuum pump to bleed your system. just attach a piece of clear hose to the nipple on your slave, loosen the nipple, and pump until there is no more bubbles

 

I have that same problem, what i was told is to always drive in first gear before you shut off your car, or put it in gear then reverse.

Best thing to do is to make sure all the lines are bled properly, and make sure that both the slave and master cylinders are working correctly and not leaking, after that it may just need the tranny fluid changed, when changing the fluid i reccomend using the sincro-mesh fluid, it worked wonders on my buddies sr20 transmission, i am guessign it would do the same for a honda.

Come on now, there isn't a race to see who can get into Reverse faster, .

I don't even let it into Neutral all the way. Just pause in between 5th and Reverse, then go into Reverse.

 

I've had the same problem on my tranny too. I've asked this question before and everyone pretty much said it's normal. No worries. Just put it in another gear other than Reverse at first, and then put it in Reverse. If it still won't quite go in, try shifting into another gear, then try Reverse again.

 

I always go, 2nd to reverse. Works for me...

 

anyone has failed to mention that if you can't get it into gear, you rev the engine and it will slide into gear while trying to get it into gear.

 

well... at least now I know I'm not the only one with a problem like that, when I got off work today I had my brother help me with it. a couple of you guys mentioned the slave cylinder... the master cylinder is what I replaced and bled air through, it is the one directly connected to my clutch pedal... so should I go down and do something with my slave cylinder too? ??
