Tranny Question: Need correct answers please.
So my '94 Gsr tranny is grinding on 2nd gear only. I know I need a newer tranny. My question is, I searched the classifieds here and some member is selling new synchros for all the gears including reverse for a tranny rebuild. The kit is $160. I hear from people that a rebuild is just as expensive as a newer tranny. What is the smarter option. Plus I could buy another tranny, but its always a risk of it grinding once installed. Wouldn't replacing ALL the synchros be better in the long run? What does actually grind? The synchro or the actual gear? Thanks for the help.

If you can get a kit for the gears, then just replace the gears. Good luck find another GS-R tranny. There is no problems with your tranny it is one of the gears synchros from either mis-shifting or just total abuse. Just get the synchros replaced. That is my opinion, you might get a tranny from somewhere that could be total junk, and then you would be out a lot of money and be in the same situation.
clutching teath and syncro sleeve is what you hear when you grind gears. clutching teeth are on the actual speed gear itself (in this case 2nd gear) the reason you hear this grinding is because the syncronization process isn't as efficiently taking place any longer. the reason it isn't as efficient is because the brass blocking ring (kinda works like a clutch between the syncro sleeve and the speed gear itself) is worn down from simple wear and tear.
best way to fix this whole grinding situation is to: replace the blocking rings in the syncro sleeve and if you grind a whole lot (lot of wear on the clutching teeth) then replace the syncro sleeve and speed gear. anytime you open a tranny, you might as well replace all blocking rings, bearings, and seals anyways. so rebuilding is going to cost alot, but you'll have damn near a brand new trans. a junk yard replacement isn't a guarantee, but i'd recommend it. run the junk yard, build the trans that has bad syncro's... dont just build it back to spec, run you're own gear setup (ie b16 gears, itr gears, ls gears... mix and match for the best range) then pick yourself up a nice final and LSD. you'll have a badass trans to put in.
