Default do 98 gsr engines have 2 vtec engagements?

just what the title says. my car feels like vtec kicks in at 4800 and then again at 5600. my old b16 never did that? the gsr engine is in a 91 si and converted to obd0 so would that have anything to do with it?

No, it's not a "double VTEC" or whatever some people call it. There's the VTEC crossover like B16/B18CR and the opening of the shorter intake runners. IAB = intake air bypass found on B18C1 and H22A1/4 whose slight power increase can be mistaken for VTEC.

Longer runners are generally better for low end power
Shorter runners are generally better for top end power

I actually think Honda officially calls it a "2-stage VTEC"

5600 is where the vtec kicks in. you can tell by the intake noise that you are on the hotter lobes. at about 4400 is where the dual stage intake manifold butterflies open up to acheive high end horsepower

H22 is 4800 and 4900rpm. I'm 99% sure that 4800 is the IAB and 4900 is VTEC crossover. The GS-R seems a lot "father apart"

Not necessarily. Honda seems to have the VTEC crossover take place a short time after the optimal point in B/H series motors. H22's for example are stock at around 4900rpm, optimal at 4400-4600rpm. B16A's are at 5400rpm, optimal at around 5200rpm. I guess it gives you the feeling of a bigger boost when it engages late.. because you're bogging so much on the idle cam lol
