HELP, Car slipping out of gear.
I was driving on the highway today in 5th gear and after a while it slipped out of 5th and back into neutral. It did this a few times after about a minute or two in gear. What does this mean? Do I need a new clutch? I just had a new one put in when I put in the new motor last year. Any ideas?
What if it shifts in all gears fine but when I shift it in Reverse it kinda takes some effort like i gotta force it in. Sorry not trying to jack the thread.
That kinda sounds like my tranny right there. I usually throw it in gear first, then throw it in reverse, because I've had a friend who's car wouldn't go in reverse, so he jammed it in as hard as he could... well, now he has no reverse at all. It's like the gear isn't there.
There is a ring on the synchro that goes in with it when you push the fork into gear. The ring acts like a C-clip when it is pushed in, holding the synchro and drive gear in place. If it is a big problem, you will want to take apart your transmission and see where that ring is. If it came off the synchro, it is probably ground up into a thousand pieces and stuck to the magnet in your transmission. I've been looking for a synchro set for a while now and haven't found anything. If it is too much for you to bear, buy a new transmission.

LOL, actually, that's what he had to do most of the time.

what time is it when yer tranny slips outta gear???? time to get a new tranny.
if one gear is doing it then odds are the other gears might go too over time. check your local tranny shop for overhaul prices, or you can usually get a used tranny in good condition at your local junk yard.
