I have scheduled my 60,000 mile service on my '98 GS-R for the end of the month. I looked over the dealer recommendations sheet, but really don't want to be replacing and/or having everything serviced (some of which has already been taken care of). I recently switched my MT fluid, installed a new K&N stock-like air filter, and religiously change my oil every 3-4K with Mobil1 synthetic.

What are your "must do's" for 60,000 mile service? I'm thinking valve adjustment and new spark plugs. What else do you hiighly suggest?

New brake fluid & new anti-freeze every 2 years. Maybe you've already done that...

Valve adjustment every 30k & spark plugs every 60k. You've already done the transmission oil & air filter (every 30k).

I don't replace brake pads & rotors & axles on a mileage schedule. I just inspect them every time I rotate my tires, so they don't surprise me. But maybe yours??

I definitely need a valve adjustment because my timing sounds a little off. After I get my coolant/anti-freeze changed, would my A/C blast cooler air?

Anything else?

 

your AC will blast cooler if you get it recharged. depending on how much you use it, it might be low.

changing your coolant will ensure your car doesn't overheat.

have them change your pcv valve.

 

I was told by one dealer to do the timing belt at 60k too, and by another to do it at 90k. When I worked at a Toyota dealership we recommended 60k. Anyone know the right replacement mileage for the Teg?

My '95 owner's manual says INSPECT the belt every 30k when you adjust valve lash. There is NO replacement interval. Personally, I don't believe that for a minute, and I'd go 90k or 100k miles. Maybe sooner if I lived someplace really hot.

I bet a few years later Honda started putting 90k miles in the owner's manual. Who wants to actually read theirs??

 

according to the helms it says 90k but that was back in 1992 when the average mileage for cars driven in ayear was 8k. now cars are driven an average of 12k so i think honda changed the recommended mileage to 60k.

 

One dealer said the only problems they really see with GSRs is the timing belt snapping if they go too far over the 60k. Maybe he was just trying to convince me to drop the $$$$, but when I changed my MR2's at 70k it was so worn out it was about to snap. That kinda scared me straight.

I guess I should factor in the age of my teg too....its only got 55k but is 11 years old....

 

What's the going rate ($) for changing the timing belt on a GS-R?

You kinda have it backwards, up to 1991, most Hondas and Acuras said to change the timing belt at 60k. In 1992, they changed that to 90k miles. To my knowledge, it has nothing to do with the way the timing belt is constructed, they just re-assessed their previous maintenance schedule.

Also, the average mileage increase would only affect the change interval in the opposite direction. Timing belt age is positively correlated with snapping, while increasing mileage is as well- this would mean someone with 90k miles in 5 years should change it, while someone with 50k miles in 11 years should also change it due to age (heat, wear, etc).

I personally wouldn't change it until 90k or like 6-7 years, they tend to last awhile if you aren't beating on the car too badly.

 

According to the 2000 manual it states to change it at 105k.

Thats when i thought it was. I changed mine on my car at 110, and my momma's crv at 100 I beleive.

ok i concur, this makes more sense but you also have to take into consideration we're talking about a gsr engine which everyone knows is a rev happy engine. i would go say earliest 70k (60k if you drag race or auto cross a lot) and latest 95k.

 

I was just at the dealership the other day, and they said the timing belt is 90k, and the guy told me that the valves are self adjusting. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but this guy is pretty cool telling me how the 60k is a waste of money because you can do it all yourself. He said it's not worth the $280 they charge you.

you supose to change the timing belt, water pump, tenchner bearing and all the fluids

 

timing belt is around 80k I think. I haven't changed mine. It's been inspected by my Honda/Acura Master tech. I think there was an Acura Bulletin or Honda Bulletin about it. Master techs will be able to tell you for sure.

Timing belt @ 60k, may as well change the water pump as its driven by the TB.

 

I just checked my '98 manual and it says 60K miles for the timing belt.

they say 60k, but you can get away with 70-75k without having probs usually. If you do the timing belt do the water pump or you will really regret it.

Called two seperate Acura dealerships and spoke with the master mechanic. Both times I was told 90K miles.

 

Okay, sans the timing belt debate, is there anything else I should look to complete? So far I have the following:

• Replace Spark Plugs and wires
• Valve Adjustment
• Inspect and adjust drive belts
• Inspect valve clearance
• New anti-freeze
