Default Question about cig lighter

I just recently bought a '91 Honda Accord EX and a few things were messed up / broken so I've been slowly fixing them. The next thing on my list is the cig. lighter. It's obviously missing something that holds it in place which I will be finding in the next few days but my question is that it doesn't get any power... like when I plugged my cell phone charger into it or it has this awful neon stick shift thing that you can plug into it but neither work. I unhooked the wire... a red wire which was kinda thick, not sure the gauge, but I didn't see any other wires to try. (I was thinking maybe the red one didn't go there since it wasn't attached properly). Any details or help in getting this to work would be great.

I'm messing with my lighter as well on my 96 EX. You might try taking the console apart to get to the backside, there should be two wires I think. I think mine is burnt out or something. Everything's connected (wires are hot as far as I know) but no juice through the plug. I'm assuming they do burn out cuz I know you can get them from autopart stores.

I'm assuming you checked your fuses and stuff as well?

Inside the little plastic connection at the back of the lighter socket is a fuse link. You can resolder it and put it back in place. It's purpose in life is to keep wires from melting when you hold the lighter in for 10 min. because you want the lighter to glow brite enough to read a map.

About the fuse. I checked all the fuses... didn't see one that refered to the lighter but none of the ones I saw inside the car in the fuse box or the ones in the fuse box under the hood were blown.

I have 2 wires that nothing is hooked too at the moment. A black one which was hooked to the lighter (I said earlier it was the red but it was the black my bad) and a red one which has a piece of electical tape covering it.

I'm wondering could the lighter part actually be bad ?

Thanks for all the help so far.

I would try tracking down a Helm repair manual. I was just looking at mine and I think I found my problem. Use the search function and see if you can find Adobe Acrobat files for your car.

For my 96 EX seems to be 3 fuses (under dash, under hood, and on the lighter itself) and then a relay. Any of which can go bad, including the lighter itself. The helms tells you which terminals and stuff you can test for voltage.

Those two wires that are not hooked are your positive and negative wires. You need to plug them into the back of the lighter unit for it to work.
