Default Questions on swapping out my dx tranny....

I really need to get rid of my dx tranny on my civic hb, I just cant stand the long gears anymore. I know I need the manual ex transmission out of a 96-00 civic, but how much would this cost me total? Could I just call up a local transmission shop around me and buy the transmission? I also need a new throw out bearing or whatever it is that is squeaking like hell. Also, do I need to take out my motor change the tranny or can I leave the motor in? And what all do I need as far as the transmission? I read all this talk about syncros and bearings and stuff? I really would appreciate any help so I can actually have fun driving my car

ex tranny can be had from $150-$300 avg. depending on the condition. yes you can remove the tranny with the motor in place.

It seems you have a 1996 or newer Civic. Yes, you do need the D16Y8 tranny (or D16Z6 from the 1992-1995 EX/Si).

When you do get the new tranny, I would also get:

Input shaft bearing
Input shaft seal
Rear seal
GM Synchromesh

If your clutch/flywheel are worn out, get a new clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing) and resurface your flywheel.

No, you don't need to pull your engine to swap a tranny.

Drain all tranny fluid.
Pull both axles (this is by removing caliper and rotor and breaking loose the axle nut.)
Unplug harnesses going to tranny.
Unbolt shifter linkage from tranny.
Unbolt transmission from engine.
Pry it off.

Where would u recommend buying a transmission from for 150-300 dollars? Local rebuilt transmission shop? I really dont wanna go through the internet but I have a feeling a local place is gonna charge alot more than 300 dollars for what all I need, Is there any way I could just change the gears in my dx tranny to ex gears???
