30 degrees advance??
I have been told that my timing belt must be off because, with the dizzy fully retarded, I am at +30 degrees from TDC. I know that's possible, but how many teeth would that be? I was very careful when I did the timing belt. And my second question, would the thing even run at that advance?
So how many degrees does one tooth represent approximately? I mean the car runs great except at idle and slight acceleration right now. No CEL. Sounds like it is not +30 degrees to me...
I "believe" 1 tooth is 16 degrees. I remember hearing this a while back, but this can be dependant on the motor/ head block combo/belt etc. I've had mine jump one tooth and taking off it would often stall so more than 1 tooth and I'd say it wouldnt run either.
after a few teeth you can bend valves very easily. Also if you set your timing upside down(arrows down)your intake valves will open when your exhaust valves should open and you will see your combustion out of your intake manifold.

Well, like I said the car runs great and I verified that it is indeed advanced approx. 29 degrees from TDC. I assume I would pick up alot more power once I got it back to the 16-18 degree range, right? Could I be causing any damage by driving the car right now? I mean, it pulls like a **** and I don't hear any odd sounds.......
Having that much advance your motor should be toast, the detonation would just be tremendous. How are you figuring it to be 30? Just kinda guess by how far up the crank the light is from the marks? I dunno man, youve got somethin weird goin on...I'd re-do the belt and then mess with the dizzy to get back to 16-18.
I used an adjustable timing light on plug wire #1, looking down the pointer. When it is set to 0, i see no marks. When it is set to 16, I see no marks, and when it is set to 30, it is almost right in-between the two white marks. Am I missing something?
are you using the paper clip to offset the electronic advance?
should be near the passenger kick panel, a small little plug that you can pull out, you need to jump the two prongs with a paper clip , then check your timing. You are probably getting a false reading.

Well if you are checking timing, you need to do that to ensure a proper reading...whether or not you are actually changing the timing via the dizzy
Hrmm....I shorted the connector and it was at 20 degrees. I adjusted it back to 16 and now my car feels slower....or maybe its just running smoother. I dunno.
i once had my car 32 degrees advance ... thats 2 teeth and it had crazy accel ration out the hole but after third gear it would get lazy ... so i put back to TDC and it felt alot smoother but just not as Quick out the hole

20 is OK because your distributor can actually advance a little past that

Dont worry, its not mechanical timing your talking about, its electronic.
As for your drivetrain, long as you didnt set your teeth on the belt wrong, you should be ok.
