Default Axles?

The picture is courtesy of MwGSR:

What is that rubber ring around the middle of the shaft? Can it be removed if it serves no purpose for ITR?

The top shaft in the picture, the ABS ring is the one between the CV boot retaining ring and the shaft spline (top right joint), right?

Thanks.

It is a dampener. Takes the vibration out of the axles... probably b/c they are not balanced.

Yes that is the ABS ring.

Ring in the middle of the shaft = balancer gimmic, comes on oem axles only
The abs ring is the gold notched plastic ring on the spindle ends of the axles....

Ummm. My 98 ITR does not have the balancer/damper rubber things. Looks like factory axles to me. What gives?

Yes that is the ABS ring.</TD></TR></TABLE> i always thought it was so the axle wouldnt hit the LCA, and if it did, it had that rubber to protect it
