Just looking for your opinions re: placement. and is it safe to put the sensor in with out the wire so I can drive it home to hook up the gauge (can't weld myself)
TIA

from what i've heard: mount it half the diameter of the runner alway from the head on the 3rd runner.

One place I have heard is actually lower so you are monitoring all four cylinders combined.

#3 is supposed to run the hottest though. that position will give you the most accurate reading of how hot it is inside your engine.

See, I've never understood why the EGT needs to go to a specific runner. If you've got a cylinder that's running much hotter than the rest, then you've got problems. Yes, I know not every cylinder gets exactly the same amount of air or fuel, but it should be close enough to not have to matter where the EGT is. I say just make sure it's as close to the head as you can make it.. like 1 or 2 inches away from the head.. with the probe in about half the diameter of the runners.

I think preference for cyl 3 is highly overrated.

The only reason people even say that is because of the 1-3-4-2 firing order (3 almost always has a cyl burning next to it, so it supposedly retains heat).

that is a good place but there have been issue where people have had the pin/sender breaking off and it has fallen into there turbo. a good spot is the flange of the downpipe....make that a safe spot.

the only reason I said #3 is because that cylinder is commonly known to run hotter. who knows, maybe its 50 deg, maybe its 3, but if you have no other reason to choose one over the other, then why not put it on #3.

I believe its number 3 because of the head cooling, number 3 will run the hottest. You dont what to put the egt where too many variables come into play. You want the cylinder that runs the leanest that is a safe way to go, because you know that the other cylinders are running cooler and you can tune from there. Running the egt in the downpipe or at a point where all the cylinders meet does not give you an accurate reading. Thats just my opinion, some feel more inclined on other areas.

Mine is loacted in the exhaust housing right before the mani flange so that I get a reading from all four runners...

New pics of my setup should be up by tomorrow..

Actually, the best cylinder to mount a probe is to do all four, with a seperate probe for each cylinder and a data logger, but not everyone has that kind of money to burn.

one in each cylinder is just fine if you are tuning the car or have deep pockets and like the Christmas light effect inside of your cockpit but one well placed EGT usually gets the job done!
