Default Front hub has LOTS of play?!!

Well, im drivig and all of a sudden i get a clicking noise from my passenger side when turning left, i figured it was just the axle. I go to jack the car up, adn the wheel seriously moved alot, not just rotated, but up down back and forth. Pull teh wheel, caliper, and disc off, to see that the hub has some serious play in it. THe axle nut is still on, but im not sure if it is tightened, just though about that, but even if it isnt, i dont remember being able to move my hub around like that with the axle out. Whats my problem, bearing? I dont have a press, so if it is, will a hammer work.... lol.

im not certain, but id check the condition of your ball joints, upper and lower, as well as the tie rod end. that is if its the whole knuckle moving, not jsut the hub. if its the hub moving its probably the bearing

If it's starting to make a grinding noise, it's the bearing.

Yeah, its weird, i just tighhtened it up, it came loose cause i forgot to notch the outer edge in, and now its fine, but i never recal ever having play, but its not grinding either. Oh well, i ll just drive it till something else goes wrong, lol.

even if you tighten the hub nut up, the bearing will still have play if it is bad. pretty much all the hub nut does is hold the axle in, it doesnt put any pressure in the hub
