Vtec Newbies Q....
Good day all,
Recently I owned a Civic EK converted to B18C GSR engine. As I drive the car, I've noticed 2 things that need to be clear out....
1. When Vtec is open (sounds damn good), there is a lots of smokes came out
from exhaust. Is it normal for a Vtec engine? If not, what is wrong ?
2. As I drive the car for certain period, suddenly the check engine indicator turn
on. I stop the car and turn off the engine. When I start back the engine, the
indicator turn off.It happends quite regularly. What happened actually? Does
this means my engine having problem? If so, what is the problem probably?
Thanks in advance...
p/s-sory for poor language...

as for the smoke question, no engine "should" smoke really. i would have it looked at as it could be any number of problems.
as for the CEL (check engine light), again this could be any number of things. at the top of the forum for EG/DEL SOL 92+ there is a CEL reference telling you how to check this youself and how to read it and basically gives u a general idea of what is going wrong. if you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself most shops carry a OBD-2 scanner for your car and they can search the code and tell you what is wrong.
If you could possible figure that out alot of people here are very willing to help you out.

Ehem .... as stated in the title ... i'm a newbie
I have read the CEL code and still couldn't understand it well. Anyway it seems that this CEL is very complicated things which can detect any unusual thing on a car. Really impressive.....
Juz silly q .... what is O2 ? Where to find this part in the engine? What is its function?
Thanks for the reply.
p/s- This forum is the most active HONDA board yet to be found on the net... Congrates to moderators and all members.. Keep it up.....

o2 is referred to the o2 sensor which gets readings (or something) and communicates with your cars ecu.
Have a paper clip with you and when you get the CEL, run the code.

as to your o2 questiong, a o2 (oxygen) sensor monitors your air to fuel mixture burn rate. basically if you car is running lean (not engough gas) it will richen it up. and vice versa.
Thanx a lot for the reply....
Actually rite now my car is in workshop to change standard cluth plate to racing clutch ..... For that I've found one more thing that make me don't understand...
My B18C GSR engine using a B16A flywheel ..... Does this thing has any impact on CEL indicator?? What is the impact (negative or positive) on engine and performance???
p/s- To know more ---> to feel more --->to loves more..... (going to fall in love
with Vtec )

hello all....please forgive my ignorance in formatting questions. i am a new vtec owner as well as a new member of this site. i recently swapped a b18c1 into my ek and my cel light is on. after running computer it states something to effect of manufacturer's air/fuel management sensor...? can i replace that sensor or do i have to replace whole intake? The swap was done at sea level and now im in higher altitude if that makes any difference.
#2...im having a throttle lag...the throttle cable is tight and there is no slack. while holding engine at a constant rpm i will have a slight "lag" where the throttle turns off for a split second and then engage again. i dunno. any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

well most of that "smoke" is carbon build up in the exhaust piping. it's not actual smoke, just loose carbon flowing out of the exhaust due to the high speed of the gasses coming out. I've had my Si for quite a while now, great maintenance record, and it's at about 115K miles now and mine has never put out smoke from the exhaust.
If it's just a burst of "smoke" it's probably just carbon build up. If its continuous, get it checked out, it's probably an o2 sensor when you're getting your CEL. The most common reasons for a CEL to go off are the o2 sensors and a loose gas cap.
also note, more carbon build up came out of my aftermarket exhaust when i had it, but not my stock one, which i have on now.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but get it checked out.
