Default Mis-shifted, damage?

Mis-shifted on the way home tonight. Went from 4th to 3rd at around 80mph. Went to 3rd, heard the engine get up and saw the tach jump. I slammed the clutch down in about .01 sec as soon I heard what I did. Tach never went past 7000. Car drove home fine and idles fine. Is the car alright or should I take a close look? ****, ****, ****!

Well if it only hit 7000 I'm sure it will be ok. I know it sounds HORRIBLE when you mis shift. Hopefully nuthin is wrong....

7000 rpm? Hell, add another 2000 and you would probably still be fine.

unless you overrevved(which u didnt) I think you will be ok...hell, after I hit 10k rpms in my gsr(with R valvetrain), the idle lopes and it rides a little more rough..lol..the head is in the machine shop now, so I'm sure I'll get a call within a day or two telling me about how I bent all 16 valves...

Well now that I think about it, I could have been as high as around 90. I had just shifted from 3rd to 4th at around 7500 rpms, stayed in 4th for maybe a couple seconds and tried to go to fifth. If I wouldn't have dumped the clutch so fast, I think I would have overrevved or at least came really close. Maybe I wasn't clear in my first post, sorry. For those who have overrevved, did your needle fly way past redline? If I did do damage, would I know immediately? Car drives fine now.

TypeR01-424,
I can hit around 90 mph before I shift from 3rd to 4th. You should be fine.

If your car runs sluggishly or makes a ticking sound you may have done damage, otherwise you're ok.

as posted, even at 90 MPH, you're still at the end of 3rd gear...you have no worries as long as the information you gave us is accurate

when I first got my GS-R I was on the freeway going about 80 and I went to down shift to 4th to pass someone. well I accidently went from 5th to 2nd!!! the tach was straight down musta been at like 11k rpm. it scared the **** out of me. I need to have the car checked out still but it seems to run fine 'cept for idle is alittle rough

sounds like you should be fine....just don't go into 3rd at the top of fourth....then there might be problems!!

Accurate as I can remember. Remember I was acclelerating too long in 4th. Basically I just went there to get to 5th and slow down. I'm gonna drive it today. I'll watch it carefully. I wanted to know if you risk valves immediately when you misshift or only when the rpms fly past redline. Thanks to all for the input.

yes..if you bent a valve(or two) the car would definately ride different...like the rough idle that guy was talkin about..cuz that is the same thing mine did when i overrevved...ticks loud as hell and idles rough. good luck

Drove the R to work today. 30 miles, one VTEC run. Car drives the same, sounds the same, and shifts the same. I guess it's a good thing that I wasn't speed shifting then I probably wouldn't haven't been able to react fast enough before going pas redline. Is that usually the case when people overrev and do damage?
Should I do a compression check? I don't want problems related to this in a few weeks.

I wouldn't do one, I mishifted also, and the car still ran good, w/ no check engine light going on. I asked the dealer to do a compresstion check just to be on the safe side. The dealer told me that OBDII is so sensitive that it would pick up if something was wrong. I got one done anyways and the results turned out ok

Been a week since I almost fu@*ed up. I've been driving the car easy, only 2 2nd gear VTEC runs. Car runs good, no noises, tranny same, mpg same, VTEC kicks in the same. Can I consider myself safe from future surprise engine/drivetrain failure? I have a long drive this weekend and don't what something to happen.

consider yourself lucky. If your car still idles smooth your ok. When you miss a gear your rev limiter will not work. It will work only if you have the car in a gear and off the clutch. Dont believe me try it. i have a modified ecu by x/stole my money. I wish i would have never spent that $450 dollars just so I can really have 4hp to the ground. For that reason you will need to take your head off and take ot to a machine shop= $800+
