think mechanic's trying to screw me
I have a 2000 honda accord with an automatic transmission. For a few days when the motor was cold (i.e. in the morning when i go to work & then when I left work) it would slip into gears. You know, it would kind of rev high and then it would catch. Then on the third day of this happening I was driving it to work and the gear display on the dashboard was flashing D4 and it wouldn't go into 4th gear and the engine light came on. I was able to put it in D3 and it ran fine. Also, once the motor warmed up it ran smoothly with no problems. So I take it in to Cottman, the chain, and they do their "free" diagnostic check, can't find anything and say it's something internal and they have to open it up and see what's wrong with it. Without putting too much thought into it or getting advice from other people I say go ahead. Then they call me after the weekend and tell me they need to do a total rebuild of it and it's gonna cost anywhere from $2300 to $2700. I looked online and saw you can get a refurbished one for about $1500 but they didn't even suggest that. I called around and this one place in town said they could fix it definitely cheaper than them and if it does need a rebuild then it would probably be cheaper to get a refurbished or find one with like 30,000 miles on it or something. So I think I may tell cottman to put the transmission in a box and have my car towed to this other place. This other place is also offering the same warranty that cottman would. Anybody out there got any insight into this situation. Almost 3 grand sounds pretty out there for a transmission that wasn't totally f***ed, or didn't seem that way anyways
Don't know what the problem could be but it does sound like they are trying to screw you. Take it somewhere else and see what they say. Then from that you can better decide what you should do. Have it rebuilt, buy a low milage used one or a refurbished one.
You don't have to pay for what they have done have you? If so, tell them to put it back in the car and you drive it straight to the next shop.

The last Accord tranny I sold ran $4000 installed. This tranny came from a company called either H&A or H&T transmissions. It had a 50 month 50k mile warranty and came with new Honda solenoids installed. This may not sound like a big deal but I've seen re-man trannies with used solenoids or aftermarket solenoids on them. Do not let a shop rebuild it. I've seen several cars come in with a tranny some local shop rebuilt that has major problems. Find a good re-man and go with it, ask about warranties and extended warranties. If they give you a longer warranty option, go with it.
well, I had a choice of having them put it in a box and the other shop would come with a tow truck and pick it up or pay even more for them to put it back in and drive it to the shop. So I did the box thing and saved about $150. They charged me about $260 for dropping it out, opening it, and inspecting it. Any good places I could go online to check different replacement transmission prices and their warranties? I would like to have some sort of idea of what I might be looking at if that's what the new shop suggests I do.
oh, I didn't know the other shop was coming with the tow truck. Good choice, don't give that shop anymore money. As for online shops for auto tranny's, I have no clue. Sorry
would it be a good idea to try to find one at a junk yard? I'm not a mechanic per se, although I know how things work and can do some basic stuff but I don't really know where to look for transmissions.

For that car I would not reccomend a used transmission. Those factory trannies had problems any way. Try this http://www.hnatrans.com I've put three of their trannies in in the last six months and have had very good luck with them.
edit: Forgot they are wholesale only so you would have to have a shop order it.

I thought the sixth generation Accord had an extended warranty for the automatic transmission until 100,000 miles. Do you have high mileage?
From what I understand is that Honda will warranty most cars from certain years and models as long as it is included in the transmission replacement program, and has less than 100,000 miles. It wouldnt hurt to call a few honda dealers and give them your vin number and see if this applies to you.
i had to create a new account because it wouldn't let me post anymore today. my vin is
Thing is though, the mechanic says that the tran has been worked on before and that voids the warranty but a girl below posted and said there was a recall....does that void a recall as well???

haha, yeah you only get 5 post per day until your a full member.
I don't know if the work would void the recall or not. In one way you would think no and the other you would think yes. Just call a dealer and ask them.

The VIN comes up clean so your best action at this point would be to call a local dealership and if they give you the run around call Honda Customer Service at
1-800-999-1009. Explain the situation to them and they may be able to do something for you. It does complicate it slightly if it has been apart before.

Okay, I feel like I may finally be coming to some sort of resolution here. The 2000 Accord transmissions do have the 100k warranty and my car is covered. However, the transmission is already apart and about to be rebuilt. Called Honda USA main line. They said that I can have my mechanic do the work and then mail or fax them the work order and payment receipt along with a cover letter describing the issue and apply to have them reimburse me. So, I guess that's what I'm gonna do and I'm assuming that Honda will reimburse me because my car was doing exactly what their warranty extension/recall notification described and I'm sure that they would like to avoid the possibility of class action lawsuits because of this known problem. Thanks everyone for your posts, I think this website just saved me a lot of money.
