How to tell how type r head??
just bought a head 00 r head.. i need to know for sure what are the markings that are distinctive. is pr3-3 means type r?
also valve springs; is there a way u can tell?. any other markings i should know of? it does not come with cams so i dont need to know that.
gonna use b16a1 automatic cams.

it is a type r head. with r springs and retainer. what i have been told.. from a trusty seller..
the b16 cams r from my old motor.
my question is is there markings to tell if it is a type r head...
with no cams .. cams would be 350 = more.. im on a budget

if im not mistaken .....the type r head should have some green paint by the distributor cam cap......plus it shoud have some mild porting in the intake and exhaust ports near the valve seats....hope this helps

under the retainers, you should see yellow paint on the intake valvesprings. the exhaust valvesprings paint should be blue. the intake valve stem in the port should look really thin and you might see that taper looking into the intake port.
your best bet is to check to see if you bowls are blended. just look inside the intake side of your head. if the area around the valves is smooth (looks machined) it's a type r head. a regular b16 head will be rough in this area. this is one of the biggest differences between the two heads. other than that they are basically cast from the same mold.
my 96 spec head says pr3-1 on it. i'm not sure what my 98 spec says. i haven't seen it in months.

ive had 2 00 and 01 spec heads. 1 was a ITR the other is a 00 SI head. both had the casting mark pr3-4 on them. also some other guys have posted about the green paint by the distributor, this is true of the ITR head, but it does come off with simple green and or castrol superclean. ur best bet is to look at the valve springs. the other characteristics mentioned would not b seen by a newbie like urself.

what i meant by newbie is that u personally cant tell the difference between the ITR head and a B16 head. it wasnt a shot at u by any means.
i have a pic of my ITR head but i dont think u can see the green paint in the pic. im lookin at my imagestation pics right now.
