alright i have a gsr turbo and when i go into boost i can sometimes see a little bit of smoke from behind and most people tell me its grayish/charcoal. and then sometimes when i stop at a light i can see the smoke come from behind and pass by my car. then i saw a lighter smoke coming from the front of my car when i stopped (maby the wastegate). the car is running perfectly and my oil level is consistant and im not overheating. my only thoughts are that maby im running a little rich or my oil drain is not correctly draining. does anybody have any opinions or help. i am going to do a compression check very soon. thanks

 

It may be difficult to check, but:


-Is there wet oil in the charge pipes?

-Is there wet oil in the exhaust?

-Is there carbon in the exhaust manifold?

-Does the smoke occur when boosting or shortly after boosting?


My car was making some greyish smoke a few weeks ago. Only happened when I made boost and then let off the gas. I thought the turbo seals were gone but I couldn't find oil in the intake or exhaust. Then I noticed a lot of dry soot in the exhaust and sooty spark plugs with a little wet oil around the very base of the screws.

Turns out I just had my PCV hoses on backwards. When making boost I would lose crankcase vacuum and oil mist would collect in the valve cover. Then this mist would get into the throttle body because the hose going to the TB wasn't the one with the PCV valve on it. I also added an oil catch can.

 

i pulled the plugs and they were all black around the base and had a whiteish tip. i plan to take off the downpipe tomorrow to see if there is any oil right in there. should i just pull off the charge pipe that connects to the turbo to see if theres anything in there?

 

Yeah. If the problem is the drain line you'll have oil in both the intake and exhaust.

 

it smokes a little while going into boost then when im decelerating it smokes and when i stop right after boosting it smokes. what does this mean

 

Maybe you have the same problem I did. Make sure the hose going to the throttle body is the one connected to the PCV valve.

 

on my gsr there is a vac hose on the very top of the throttle body (not sure which other vac hoses are on the throttle body) but that hose goes around to the back to the charcoal canister i think. ill have to double check

 

but also it ran fine and i never had any problems with the pcv before the turbo...

 

ok no oil what so ever in the charge piping. havent checked the downpipe yet though. no oil in the coolant either. no cooling issues and oil level looks the same. smoke is a grayish and sometimes appears to be lighter and sometimes darker. its kinda weird. i just need to do a compression check

 

Your pushing 309whp @10psi on a Honda, of course your going to be blowing **** out the ***.

no overheating issues or cooling problems at all yet and the oil level is holding steady. would white smoke come from the front of the car is there was an oil drain problem?? or it could be the smoke coming from the dumptube

 

If you are running an open dumptube the smoke would be coming from it.

I still think it is the PCV system. It would not have been a problem before because N/A cars almost always have the crankcase under vacuum. With the turbo you are losing this vacuum whenever the ol' boost gauge creeps past zero.

There should be two hoses (at least) on the valve cover. One will have a valve attached to it and the other will not. The one with the valve should route directly to under the throttle blade, perhaps through a charcoal canister. The other one is the "intake" for the crankcase and goes to either the air filter, a breather, or perhaps some location in the throttle body above the throttle blade.

But like I said, I was having similar trouble. Smoking every time I made boost. All I had done wrong was to put those stupid hoses on the wrong nipples!

 

same symptoms here and its my -4an oil feed line. Just a bit too big for my taste.

 

ok i need a little more info to look into the pcv. i dont have a hose at all coming off my valve cover right now and the only lines that i think your talking about is the one that goes to the top of the throttle body but that goes to the charcoal canister. need help this is on a gsr

 

ok just checked charge piping again and the downpipe. no oil in either only alot of exhaust soot. im just gonna do a compression check and see whats up with that or maby im just really paranoid and im really just running rich. plugs are very black around the base with soot and then the tip of the plug is whitish. the smoke is still charcoal grayish

my GS-R valve cover only has one hose coming off of it.. when the car was stock, it went into my intake. now it just goes down to the bottom of the engine bay ..?

i had a smoke problem under high boost. i had liquid, that i assumed to be oil (though it seemed to be as thin as water) in my DP, and i leaking from where the DP bolted to the turbo. i also had a black "swirl" on the compressor side. i'm ASSUMING it was the seals... but never found out for sure. i also suspected pcv system.. but it all seemed to be good. i dunno.. i never found the problem.. good luck. if you find it, please post.. so many people figure it out and never follow up.. this results in us having to repost later and ask all over again .. and that is

 

im just hoping that the compression checks out if it were to be burning oil or coolant would i be able to distinctivly tell by the smell from the exhaust. because i have smelt burning oil and coolant before and all i can smell is exhaust fumes with no cat

 

i hear that. yeah. my compression was perfect too. this is why i assumed turbo seals...

 

my compression is good and my turbo is brand new however when I'm shift hard under boost, I get a puff of blackish/blueish smoke. It's not major, nor can i see it in my rear view however my friend driving behind me told me about it. I'm begining to think its my valve seals cause they haven't been serviced....

 

every now and then i can see the smoke in my rear view like a little bit greyish and when i come to a stop sometimes after a little boosting i will see the smoke fly past me coming out of the exhaust and the dumptube. im gonna check the comp today or tomorrow. would an oil catch can between the pcv help at all. also what do you have to do to get the valve seals fixed? would there be a noticable smell in burning oil or burning coolant?

anymore info on what happened?

 

did compression check and it checked out at 210 on every cylinder. all is well as far as im concerned
