Default Black deposits --> Mixture rich?

I have recently learned that the black deposits I see in my tailpipe and on my spark plugs is probably due to a too-rich fuel/air mixture. Is this user-adjustable? I would like to attempt to lean it back some on my own, if possible, before bringing it to the shop. kbmcdowell

If you have black, dry deposits you have:
An overly rich mixture (unburnt fuel becomes soot), low compression, clogged air cleaner or a large plug gap.

If you have black, wet deposits you have:
A breached head gasket, worn rings or pistons.

My guess would be its a dry deposit nad first thing I would do is check your air filter then plug gap then compression.

or you can do what i did...buy "Champion Platinum" plugs for dirt cheap. then you look too see the gap is a bit smaller.....smaller gap = no big deal, so you but them in

Thank you Ken, the plugs were at around .040, and needed to be bumped up to .044. That part is done. On your suggestion, I took a look at the air filter, and woo hoo there it was. Plugged up something fierce. I put a new one in, and replaced the PCV valve as well, and no more black smoke. Thanks!
