B20Z or B16A?
dewd get this:
B20B shortblock-$400-$600 depending on condition
B18C head-$500
JDM Pr3-$250
B16 tranny-$600
that will net you a baseline of 185 stock at least
Don't pay more for the B20Z block, get whatever's cheaper and then upgrade your pistons later

Another example of a shoestring-budget build-up CR-VTEC motor that would NOT put out 185hp AND would not like to be revved to 8000RPMs...
If this guy is saying that a B16A is expensive, then I'm sure the CR-VTEC built RIGHT would not be affordable to him - no offense intended. It's takes more than the set-up you listed to make 185whp...keep revving that block to 8000 on stock bottom end...
As for stock vs. stock I'm pretty sure the B16A2 would out-pull the B20Z in a drag race. How do I know? My fincee' has a B16A2 swap in her 1992 Si HB, and my friend has a 1994 CX with B20Z. Although we haven't raced, I've driven both cars and hers pulls stronger. He's also got the LS tranny and Skunk2 intake manifold.
Now, down the road when he goes CR-VTEC and BUILDS the motor right, it will be no contest.
I'll say B16A. Loves to rev, and you can drive the **** out of it.
B20Z is nice too, MUCH better than a stock motor, but it was intended to power a CR-V, so high-RPM racing isn't the best thing for it all the time. It's great for someone who wants more around-town power down low.
