Default help with eratic idle after Cam Gear install...

just installed my toda cam gears and my car wont idle properly, it fluctuates from 1000rpm all the way to 50rpm, the strange thing is that it only goes that low after i blimp the throttle and the tach needle would settle at about 50-100 rpm, then it would rise again to about 900rpm. Its really hard to to take off or reverse cos i would always stall the car, after about 10minutes of driving it would idle normally again(yes car is warmed up etc etc) and it drives perferctly normal......... what could be causing this? My cam gear is set to +1, -1, also would adjusting the cam gear affect the ignition timing? should i advance the ignition alittle?

any help is appreciated.

Try sitting them back to 0 and checking the timing, just to be sure thats what it is. Not sure if this is much help. I am pretty sure everytime you adj the gears you need to set the timing as well.

yup. check your timing. It HAS to be adjusted every time you change the cam gear settings... You probably retarded it a little.

Also, your car will stall out at 600 rpm's... There is no way you are idling at 50 rpm's... I take it you don't have a vafc or anything that is more accurate than the stock tach? That's prolly why you think it's as low as 50 rpm's...

What cams are you using, btw? Stock?

try setting your gears to TDC 0deg and see if it does the same thing.

Technical? Ok, how about you pull out a manual for your car and read the section on how to adjust your timing at the distributor. Use a timing light and put your timing at 18 degrees. Now let's see how your car runs.

My other comments were about the reliability and accuracy of the stock tach at low and high rpm's... It's pretty off.

found out what was wrong, i didnt adjust my toda gears properly, they were actually on +10, -10, this would explain the idle. Funny thing is....... my car is so much faster with this setting compared to stock.

Will i damage my engine with this drastic cam gear settings?

also another Q, when installing the cam gears do they have to be set at 0 or can u pre-adjust it and then install it?

10,10 holy ****, your are lucky that thing is even idling at all. you have to adjust when they are on the car. you have to make sure your cam timing is dead on before you change the settings.

N1spec,

dude, i think u better take the sprockets off and get them fitted again. Eric the other ITR had no problems, i think it was due to the fact that u pre adjusted them and adjusted them again. But dammit, car doesn't even ping at all with that settings, and it feels bloody quick. lol

what to do eh?

lol i dont think pre-adjusting them and installing is a problem.... i asked Robert and he said its OK.

but fuq im just afraid that its just too extreme with +10, +10 settings, does anyone know if this is OK. I have stock camshafts.

the car pulls so hard in 3rd gear is amazing. dunno whether to leave it or re-set the cam gears.

lol.. i wouldn't depend on Robert too much, if he knew what he was doing, the car wouldn't be on 10,10! lol
