Default Tachometer Problem in a 92 hatch 2001B18c1

I have a 92 hatchback(car never had a tach before) with a 2001 GSR swap and a 95 gsr dash swap.
i hooked everything up and got no tach signal. so i ran a new wire from the distributor down to the harness for the tach signal wire. Now it just sits there and when i hit the throttle the tach will make a random atempt to read the signal( it with jump around) but its not even sychronized with the throttle. It will just somtimes jump

then i tryed a autometer tach and got the same problem. then i checked all the continuity(sp) and every connection that was made was good.

I dunno guys i am stuck and frustrated and would just like to move on to other things but i need to get this worked out. Any help would be appreciated.

what wire harness are you using?

if it is a 00 harness then you will need to run a wire from your dizzy to the blue wire on the shock tower on driverside...then your tach will work

yea its the 01 harness, i was told i needed to hit a pin at the ecu for the tach to work because the 99-01 motors use a crank sensor for a more accurate reading? i dunno if its true.

I found the wire and i am still getting a shitty signal... when i am on the gas the tach is like barried reads like past the oem marks goes to like 15k. I think the guy i talked to is right and i have to get the signal at the ecu... Anyone know which wire?

On a 2000 and 2001 GSR the tach gets its signal from the ECU and VSS not the distributor. You have to run a wire from the ECU to the gauge cluster. Let me know if you need to know what color wire it is.

you said you installed an autometer tach and it still didn't work? Well I just installed mine last night and it didn't work at first too! IF and only IF your tach is brand new...you might have to cut those little loop wires behind the tach...I think its the blue first....try that....if that don't work then cut both blue and brown. That's only if you didn't try cutting it already! LOL that's what i forgot to do, and when i hit the throttle full blast the needle read only 2 grand... o.O !!! its all G now...COBALT AUTOMETER IS SEXY AT NIGHT!!!! good luck man

its not the autometer man i cant even get the stock tach reading right... but in the autometer directions it tells you to cut those wires, thier for 6cly and 8cly cars.

Alright it is in the largest of the three plugs down at the ECU. The wire is a red wire green stripe and has silver dots on it. Then you have to run it to the back of the gauge cluster. And on the cluster the largest plug has a blue wire there. Tap into that wire and you should have a working tach.
