I was looking in the service manual for our 2002 CRV to see what maintainance might need to be done and noticed that for the coolant they don't suggest changing it until 110,000 miles. That seems a bit high. Same thing for the spark plug change interval, which is 110,000 miles.

Anybody have any thoughts on if this?

 

Yeah, Honda is desinging some kick *** ****.

 

yeah, most new cars come with coolant that dont have to be serviced untill 100k.
and spark plugs, well the same.
i would change them anyways...

Yeah, I'm tempted to change it as well, but I figure if it really doesn't need to be changed, why waste the money?

Funny thing is that after the first coolant change, it needs to be changed every 2 years.

 

They're all under a lot of pressure to increase service intervals. They can use de-aerated water for the factory fill, but how is a normal car-owner gonna use that? The corrosion package that's in antifreeze works so much better when there isn't any oxygen dissolved in the water to begin with.

Do you want the engine to last thru the warranty - or do you want it to last longer??

 

Thanks for clairifying that; it makes sense that they would be pressured to increase the service intervals as much as possible even if it's not the best for engine longevity. I sometimes forget it's not the engineers running Honda but the management.

 

also the new dex cool type of coolant (red stuff) has better inhibitor to make it last longer
