How should i clean a turbo engine bay? i've searched..but didnt come up with what i was quite looking for..any pics would help, thx

 

Probably the same way you would clean any engine bay.. What exactly are you trying to find out?

Basically you plastic bag the distributor and alternator, spray simple green all over the place, let it sit and then go crazy with a power washer.. Thats what everyone i know that cleans their engine bays does.. Hope that helps

 

yep, and make sure you the air filter and battery too.
And make sure the engine is cold, you don't want to be cracking any parts by spraying cold water on them (exhaust manifold)

 

Heres what I do

* I cover the filter/distibutor with a plastic bag, and also dont spray water on your alternator
* I spray the dirt in the engine bay with Simple Green, I let it soak in and then I use a toothbrush(not your everyday one ) and i break up the dirt making intot muddy looking film
* Then Spray the engine bay/dirt with your hose removing all the dirt
* Sometimes i will go over spots I missed
* Last I go over it with a towel, and wipe off any excess dirt, water

Clean your hood well, as in a Turbo car the hood sees alot of exhuast.

 

all this effort with plastic bags. No bags needed. spray down, soak for a minute or 2, rinse, start, done.

Just what I needed. I was wondering this today, because I need to clean up the engine bay a bit from the exhaust from my dumptube, etc.

Yeah heres a partial shot of my Engine bay, I clean it about every other oil change so about every 4000-5000 miles. I have to put a little more effort since my car is white, but hey when white is clean it really looks great

Dont listen to this. Use something to cover the distributor, filter, exposed wiring, etc.

 

i'm a little skeptical about spraying water all over the engine bay.. would spraying degreaser here and there.. and a bucket with water and a cloth work just as well? i know it would be more time consuming but im just afraid of ******* electrical ****.

 

i can understand the concern guys really but come on. This isnt a volvo that fills the distributor with water and the spark plug holes flood. And its not a bimmer where car washes will soak the control unit. This is how i have washed my engine bay for the last 6 years and have had no problems. Use some common since, dont pressure wash 10000 psi directly into the distributor or something stupid like that. Spray you degreaser of your choice on everything, perhaps not the intake if yours in an open element up top. If you have extra grime or wish to use alittle elbow grease, use a a brush on valve cover, strut towers, rad. support, underhood, brake and clutch resivoirs, whatever. Then with your nozzle just rinse it off.

Rinse the hell outta the bay w/simple green, grab a coke, then pressure wash the **** outta it.

Then spend the rest of the day cleaning everything you just pressurewashed out of your enginebay all over the rest of your car.

I've done this like a bazillion times, and it might not start up on like the first 5/6 cranks, keep cranking and it'll start up. Let it run for a few minutes and any water that WAS in the motor just evaporated

 

Ive always done the same...
Some foamy engine bright and OR SIMPLE GREEN, I let the engine cool but not got too cold I think a little warmth helps break down the grime cover or remove the air filter (might as well clean it too) dist & alt... leave them be, (hell they get wet when it rains, hose water not gonna hurt them) let it sit for a bit the hose it down.
Home Depot has a cool little nozel that goes from 3/4" to 1/4" this nozel does wonders with washing off the grime also city presure seems to work well with it too

yeah, good method.

 

the distributor is sealed...but I wouldn't use a power washer.

just get a bucket of suds and a little water.

 

Im telling you guys, if enough water gets to the wire terminals at the distributor or any exposed wiring it can cause a problem. Why would you want to risk sitting there and cranking forever or waiting for it to dry or causing a potential problem when all you have to do is take a plastic bag and wrap it around the distributor?

If it hasnt happened, it can and it will. Why not take the extra precaution? I dont understand advising otherwise.

Yeah I do it just to have a peace of mind, Sure you can do it without it, and yes all you have to do is avoid those areas, but sometimes our heads aren't on straight and you can accidently soak something you shouldn't.

It takes me 5 seconds to cover the filter/distibutor, but it's up to you.

 

i just put a bag of the distributer spary it with this foaming engine cleaner let it sit spray it off with the hose and repeat and it comes out nice

 

WOA: Remember to take the bag OFF the filter before leaving.....

and if you don't know where the spark plugs are supposed to go make sure you write it down

 

Well, I didn't bag anything, but I would reccommend it just to be safe. I did the whole foaming Engine Brite trick, including the foaming tire wet finishing move while driving. It blinged out the engine bay HARDCORE. The foaming really helps out a lot. then the tire wet

looks good....i always use the Engine Brite degreaser, never tried the foam stuff, have to try that......

also, for cleaning the inside of your windows, as long as you don't have tint......is to use "Mean Green"....you can get it at walmart, and it is supposed to be dilluted down, but i never dillute it, and works great on glass, no streaks, and especially if you smoke....it will just wipe the smoke film right off, without smearing.
