Default Paint for cage and interior

I can't seem to find the post I read a long time ago so here is the same question again. What do you use for painting the roll cage/interior?

I was thinking of rustoleum non-slip gray. Won't get as hot as black, won't reflect light as much as white, won't get slippery when wet...

Yup. Rustoleum is the popular choice. Color is up to you, but there again, gray is popular.

Neither is mine, but it works with the car.
Use a sponge brush as much as possible. The overspray from Rustoleum spray paint makes a mess. It'll get everywhere you don't want it, even if you think you've masked off well, trust me. If I had it to do over again, I'd do gray.

I used an epoxy primer, sprayed it out of a gun with everything taped off. Turned out great, but I had everything pulled off the car, inside and out.

The thing I like about an epoxy primer (self etching) is it "bites" into the metal really well, so a little scratch won't go thru the paint.

Rustoleum has a unique spray called "Hammered Finish" in grey. Lowe's carries it. It has a textured finish that wears well and hides imperfections really good. I used it on my floorpan and it looks cool.

I use brush-on Rustoleum. If you put it on when it's not freezing outside, it works great. I did mine white because the car came that way and I wasn't doing the entire thing.

I think that's what's used on my cage... I'll have to check the can to be sure though: http://y3k.shacknet.nu:31338/g...bum34

I used Rustoleum brush on, I THOUGHT I got gray, but it was actually light gray, which was close to white:

I did the scond coat in gray, along with most of the interior, and the engine bay:

I actually did a coat of black POR-15 chassis coat as the first coat on the cage, since I happened to have a small can of it left over from another project. That stuff goes a LONG way....

I did high wear areas in por15, like the foot wells, and the spots where I put tires/tool box in the back when towing. the rest I did in tremclad Hammered Look textured spray paint. I used silver because it's somewhat neutral, I can leave the interior silver and paint the rest of the car whatever without looking like a clown, and because bolts/crap show up easier than on black.

mask the hell out of everything though, I have tons of overspray in places I didn't even know existed!

I am trying the hammered on the floor of our new del sol. For the cage, I have always likw black despite heat because the cage is invisible from the outside of the car. I used to do a semi gloss, but I tried rustoleum satin and that looked awesome...

Yeah, the satin black cage looks really good. Hmmm, perhaps I might do the black cage and gray floor.

i always thought you were supposed to paint a cage gloss white. reason being that gloss paint cracks easily, so it will crack if a weld cracks. white also looks really bad when its dirty, so you have to clean it a lot. cleaning = inspecting, so you can notice cracks before they become a problem

Theory sounds interesting... although we will paint our cage gray. White just seems too bright for me... on a hot cali racing weekend it brightens up the interior a lil too much for my tastes and comfort. Black would be super hot and difficult to keep looking clean IMO. Or maybe we should keep the cage brushed metal lookin' with clear coat.. hehe.

I don't know about Rustoleum. It made my car smell like fish guts for over a month. I'll try a different brand next time.

Hard Hat only smells for a couple days if you sun dry it and it's the most durable overall.

That gets my vote. I would like to do a whole car in bare metal with clear coat.

I used Rustoleum's machine grey for mine. It worked really well. Just don't put a thick coat on.

Edit: I had to fix the image tags......

I went to a auto paint supply store (look in the yellow pages) and picked up the paint color I wanted. They mix the paint, give you thinner and hardener and if you want it clear coat. First I primed it "Rustoleum" primer, then painted it. I opted for the same exterior color as my car.
