Recommendations for getting into road racing in Salem/Portland, OR area?
Just wanted to get some info from locals about getting into some type of club racing around here, what organizations are available, etc? Any help is appreciated!
Portland clubs:

Sanctioning body:
http://www.icscc.com/
A driver's school through one of the clubs will allow you to enter the novice program. Check out the dates on TC's or Cascade's website.
Good luck!

In addition to the above, there is SCCA Oregon Region.
http://www.oregon-region.com/
They only race at Portland.
There is North West Region, Seattle area
http://www.nwr-scca.org/
They race at Pacific Raceways and on a POS airport with tractor tires.
Conference or ICSCC offers the best opportunities for Driver Schools/Education. You can chose from four tracks that are all relatively local.

As far as these events go, I read a post a while back about an Audi club at PIR where if it doesn't fill up with club members on a race or open track day, you can hop in also if your a member of some other club with similar rules and experience, this true?

OR region Alfa Club has NEVER filled up at PIR for their open track days. You can always get in.

Alfa thats it... close enough
Is the BMW club the same idea?
Also I've looked into the SCCA rules as well as NASA. SCCA seems much more strict (and expensive) to do, if I'm not mistaken (I read the SCCA book 6 months ago, NASA last night). How does ICSCC stack up in terms of how poor you can be and still have some fun?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking whether you can just show up the day of the event, without registering beforehand? Or are you asking whether the events usually fill up? In either case, you would have to contact the folks who run the events. You can find their e-mail addresses on the links above.
I can vouch that BMW CCA does not require that you own a BMW to join or to participate in their events.

You can race a bone stock car with the required safety equipment installed. Same as SCCA and NASA by the way. Depends what class and prep level you have your sights set on.

I won't have time to read them before tonight but I was mainly referring to the open track driving of NASA where only a helmet and other basics are required. Competition of course, requires a full cage, suit, etc, but what I was unsure about is whether SCCA or ICSCC did the open track educational type driving without requiring a full cage and suit. The rollbar I currently have is now illegal and I don't have the cash to change it out right now at least.

Don't get me wrong, for open track I would still feel safer with what I have now than nothing, but for competition, ERW seems to be no longer a choice.

Street cars in good working order and helmets are required for the ICSCC Driver Schools. IIRC, SCCA requires a race car with all the safety gear, but then they are doing racing schools.
