Default where should my oil level be????

Ok, this is goint to really sound like a noob question, but...... when i change my oil. i was always taught to put the filter on empty, put oil in, and start it and let the filter fill up, shut it off, and check it. then fill it till its to the second mark. but when i go out and check it before i start it i the morning, its way up the dipstick. should i need to start it first, or should it just be at the full mark when its been sitting and cooled off. Basicaly am i overfilling it? its a jdm d15b vtec. and i put about 4.5 quarts in it.

i have never changed my oil filter on my own before. but i've done a oil drain and refill process before. i think the proper way is to drain your oil out, replace the oil filter, then put your oil in. check your oil dipstick until you reach the max point. have your car run for a while withing that week and recheck the oil. if it needs more, fill in more. you're set.

*i don't go by how much volume i put in it because it varies sometimes. i think it's best to stick with the oil dipstick meter.

my process...

run/drive car for a while to loosen up the old oil.
unscrew 17mm bolt (wait until car cools down of course )
drain oil
take off oil filter
lube the new filter seals with oil
install new filter
re-screw 17mm bolt
fill with 3.5-4 quarts of oil
check dipstick (at leveled surface)
and its just fine

Correct, it should be under the second dot. And just don't add 4 quarts with out checking in between quarts, my car only takes about 3.5 quarts.

=GAMEOVER= caught me on missing the "removing the oil cap" part. let me add that in...

my process...

run/drive car for a while to loosen up the old oil.
remove oil cap
unscrew 17mm bolt (wait until car cools down of course )
drain oil
take off oil filter
lube the new filter seals with oil

If you first check your oil in the moring its going to be a little high because all the oil in the filter drains out back into the oil pan. Check it after you start it and let it run for a few minutes. It should be at or just below the second mark.

I don't think I ever managed to get 4qts. into the engine for any oil change. Usually 3.5, even a bit less, will get it right in the middle of the dipstick's range.

Also, make sure your car is on even ground when you check the oil as well. If I tried to check it when parked on the street, the slight incline toward the curb would throw off the reading a bit (moreso with the y8 it seemed).

there will be some, i wanna call them 'skid' marks all over the dipstick, at least on mine there is. random oil spots on the dipstick, but there is always a full bead at the bottom between the two holes

In the morning, when everything is cool and settled, level must be at most at the upper mark on the dipstick... if there is more, just drain some and measure again until you reach the upper mark (and maybe a nail below the upper mark)...

That should be it...

And remember that oil DOES NOT go back from the oil filter to the pan... it is always there not all but fair amount of it so the engine gets the oil as soon as possible...

PROOF: when changing oil, if you remove filter, there will always be some oil that will come out of it when you take it off - even if changing oil in the morning before driving the car...

My ITR swap took 5qts the first time I changed the oil. It had been sitting for like 8months so I guess it was pretty dry inside there.

Im also a certified engine lubircation technician, at Toyota ( oil changer) lol. If you let a car sit long enough the oil will drain back out the filter and into the oil pan. See it daily. Same thing with my civic.
