Never happened to me. 1000 miles put on the car? I would be so pissed. I don't even know what I would do about that. Charge them 35 cents a mile or something.

For the benefit of him and us, he ought to complain to Honda corporate and the local Better Business Bureau.

I don't know about the shifter thing, but I was at a dealership around me, and saw the techs beating the crap out of cars right in front of the dealership.

The shift lever sits in a housing bolted to a small tub that holds the shift rod and shift lever at the top-back of the transmission. Is that what you mean is loose?

Or, do you mean that the shift lever is not engaged to the shift rod and that's loose?

In either case, you may not be able to move it from or to the shift gate.

It' looks like it got beat on by someone that can't drive properly. I hope that his synchros are okay. You've got double-cone synchros on the main shaft and counter shaft that are not at all bullit-proof.

I think that tub is loose or broken. You can put the car in first gear, and shake the shifter assy left or right about 2 inches in gear! You can shake it (in gear) up and down 2 inches.Hell it may be the shift rod loose or broken. When you drive the car you dont know what gear you are in because its so loose. When I say shifter assy,,,I mean to say shift lever.

Sounds like the "L-shaped" shift lever to me. If that's the case, the repair won't be too expensive. It's only $20 over at http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com.

If it's that, you may want to replace the set-bolt too.

Also, when you put the shifter back together, you may want to pack the shifter ball, ball seat and the pivot cover with a lot of Super Hi Temp Urea Grease. The grease prevents shifter oscillation noise at 3500 to 4500 rpm.
