Need help;Si having issues.
Hey guys.. i need some help.
I have an 89 Civic Si thats all stock except for a AEM CAI.
Has a new fuel filter , plugs and wires.
The problem ? It keeps acting up at different occasions.
sometimes you step on the gas and it will sputter a bit.
Other times it will die when coming to a stop.
The tack will also fluctuate. I was holding it @2k when It was acting up and the tack was jumping from 2 down to 1k and back up again repeatedly.
Other times it runs like a champ.
Can anyone help point me in the righ direction for what the problem is ?
Thanks in advance.
Julio

Did it start after you put on the fuel filter? I worked at Jiffy Lube and they wouldn't let us do Honda fuel filters because they have a bolt with an "O" and if it wasn't lined up perfect the engine will stall out for time to time...now i'm not 100%v sure on this but thats what my manager told me and i remembered it. So thats all i can think of
hate to say it but you have a ground wire loose somewhere. i have had it happen several times on different cars. so just check your wiring for any loose grounds. and have a nice day

That's what i'm thinking too.
Do a b series swap and the problem will go away. hehe

Most likely the coil in the distributor is weak.
The most obvious symptom is the tach jumping up and down.
I'll tell you just for reference a low tech test for checking the coil.
1) Pull off the #1 spark plug wire ( the one on the right when standing in front of the car).
2) Stick a screwdriver into the end of the plug wire.
3) Hold the screwdriver by the plastic handle only (do not touch the metal shaft while conducting this test). Hold the metal shaft about an 1/8 inch above one of the valve cover bolts.
4) Have a friend start the engine (don't worry, you won't get shocked, just make sure not to touch the metal shaft on the screwdriver).
5) You should see a yellow or blue spark jumping from the screwdriver to the bolt.
6) Move the screwdriver until it's about a 1/2 inch above the bolt. You should still see a stong spark.
If you don't get a spark at that point, then the coil is weak, and will need to be replaced.
Like I said before, this is a quick, low tech test us mechanics sometimes use. The correct metod of testing is with a spark tester or a scope. None of which I'm sure you own.
Hope that helps.

I think I actually got the fuel filter right.
It started fine afterwards and actually started acting up before I changed it.
