Default Bad axle or bad differential?

Sorry, hate asking these questions. Did a search and i didn't find the answer i was looking for. Please point me in the right direction if i missed something. Thanks.

Car is '91 Teg with '93 Gsr transmission with stock differential, no lsd, and Autozone axles
Question
If the differential was bad would both wheels turn freely?(ie. car up on jackstands, started up, and put into first. Both wheels turn freely on mine, although the passenger side moves alot faster than drivers side(which is where i have the problem occuring).

Situation
Driving home today, on the highway i just suddenly hear a loud humming type noise. A block before i get home im at a stoplight and when the light turns green i take off as normal then pop, pop. Rev the car(still in gear) and it doesn't accelerate. Luckily there was a gas station at the corner so i pulled in. Looked under the car and notice that the inner joint?(right name?the side that goes into intermediate shaft) poped out of the metal housing of axle on drivers side. So i think okay, whew, just another stupid autozone axle.

So i take the axle and get another one. Replace it. Then take it for a test drive. I drive not more than 10 feet and the same thing happened.

Now, i know autozone axles are notorious for bad quality. I know everyone will say that. But i think i remember reading a thread during my search and it said that if you hear a humming type noise, then your diff is probably going out.

One more thing i just thought of, reverse still worked after the axle broke. Is it supposed to be able to do that with a stock diff. I am absolutely positively sure, because after i heard a pop the second time, i back into my driveway, stop and look underneath to see the same thing. Then open the garage and reverse into it. And i know for sure my tranny is non lsd. Opinions??

how did the axles look. do youhave pics of where it came apart?

if you gently put your finger inside the tranny where the axles go in, you should be able to feel the diff. i broke mine last week and could feel the broken differential moving around freely.
i dont think its the axles.

ok, just replaced it, took it out for a drive. made it a little further this time about 2 blocks from my house and bam. same thing happened. same exact fuc$in thing. this time though it was apparent that it started when i made a u-turn.
i think i remember someone else having this same problem, so im gonna search the archives a little more and see what i come up with.

it sounds like you have a welded differential. where did you buy the tranny from?

also who did the tranny swap? have you had the tranny in for a while or did you just swap it in?

ummm where are the rollers that go on the tripod joint? Did they fall off or were they not even on there?

I ran my car in 1st gear on jackstands last weekend, and both sides turned, but the passenger side had some difficulty, I assume because the brake pads were rubbing the rotor slightly. An open differential will allow that to happen.

must of fallen out, i dunno......BUT i figured out the problem. After doing some more searching someone mentioned motor mounts and suspension geometry( ). So i took a look at the motor mounts 1st and sure enough the drivers side bracket wasn't connected to the motor at all. The 3 bolts that go into the motor were snapped in half.

so....i guess im a little happy that i found the culprit. But now i gotta take it somehwere to get that fixed. Im not gonna bother trying to get those broken bolts out.

Are you talking about the big one on the timing belt cover, or the smaller one that's on the A/C bracket? If it's the big one then *yikes* you're lucky the axle is your only problem.

Yeah it probably is, does the engine look like it's angled down in the engine bay? I'm sure it was causing the axles to bind. Got any pics of that?

Looks like the axle is too short and came out of the inside. Remanufactured axles suck.

So i just got back from the shop to try and get it fixed. Unfortunately it seems as if those three bolt holes have already been helicoiled in the past already. So now i gotta pull the damn motor tonight and bring the motor to the shop tomorrow morning just so they can properly get it helicoiled. this sucks big time.
