I want to get into road racing...

I just bought a 91 dx hatch that burned oil so I put an si (1.6) sohc in... I want to drive it as an ulternative to my integra, plus the integra theft is getting out of hand in my area so I have to be selective where I park it.. BUT after the upcomming wisconsin winter, I want to put a cage in the civic and race it! What class would I have to run in for SCCA? and where can I get a rule sheet without buying the expensive rule book.. I'm looking to get into some light racing, maybe a couple events per year at tracks within 250 miles of me.. any info people could give me would be greatly appreciated..
What I know so far..

You have to have a roll cage..
You have to have an approved helmet, drivers suit, etc.
5 point harness and racing seat
Things I'm not sure of..
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Do you need a halon fire suppression system?
What class would I need to get into? (itr, ita, blah blah balh?)
Do I need to remove all the window glass? I've seen cars that have plexi windows.
Do I need to be licenced? (other than state issued)
What about insurance?
Thanks..
a possible scca noob

Howdy, and good luck with your racing endeavors.
The forum FAQ has been carefully prepared to answer most if not all of the questions you have. If you have others, feel free to post them up.

You'd be in street mod by the way... Competitive locally? If you're a good driver. Nationally? No chance.

Unfortunately because of the engine swap you may be out of most SCCA classes, but I am not exactly sure.
Good luck, the FAQ section has a lot of links.

Isn't the engine swap hes referring to the 88-91 Si motor into an 88-91 DX? Obviously its no good for STS anymore but it could still run in Street Prepared?
Anyway, I think hes talking about road racing, not autocross.

Hmmm, the rule book is the cheapest (and most important) part of racing.
It sounds like you understand what road racing is but I also think Autocross or HPDE events are more up your alley.

Research will show you what class you will be in, be aware....you might not like what you'll be running against. The rule book is something that needs to be bought, it's not that much $$$. And you will get use out of it.
You need to look at both SCCA and NASA, one may have something that suits you better than the other. Unless you just have your heart set and know what you want to do.
NASA offers HPDE's which is really cool. That's where I'm going to start, that and auto-x's. It just really suits my budget better right now.

If you truely have a DX and not a Std, then your car would normally fall into ITA. If you actually have a Std, aka 4 spd tranny, then your car would fall into ITC. However neither class allows for motor swaps in the SCCA.
Like another H-Ter suggested, look into track days first. NASA has a great graduating program that will allow you to progress step by step into road racing. You will also learn a great deal about the rules. I'd suggest going to NASA's website and reviewing their rules. NASA's rulebook is online.
If nothing else, contact your local tracks and find out which clubs offer track days.
An SA rated Helmet and long sleeve cotton shirt are required for most HPDE/Trackday events... also get some decent front brake pads and fluid.
Good luck and have fun!

Depending on what you want to do- race wheel to wheel, AX or Lap a track, will determine what class you run in.
In general, most wheel to wheel racing does not allow engine swaps in most classes- IT, etc.
You would be allowed to run in a class called UNR (unrestricted) with Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs (www.mcscc.org) assuming you have the required safety gear.
There was a nice post by one of our members who ran through the most recent MC wheel to wheel driver's school and his experiences.

An ITC Civic can win ITC, if you run a Civic in ITA I dont think you will be quick against the other cars. If you have a true IT car then you will fall into a Solo 2 class, maybe CSP for a ITC Civic if it was ITC? There are unlimited classes with the SCCA in my region ATL also I think all of the southeast does it, it is called Super Production, unlimited basically who has the most money and wierd ideas wins.
You didn't blow anything off.. proably smarter to start with a used race car than start from scratch anyway....
anyhow start with HPDE's... check out these in your area.

To start, that's a great list for our area.
NASA doesn't hold any at Road America yet, but does so at Putnam Park, GingerMan, Mid-Ohio, etc.
Also, if you join BMW CCA (Badger Bimmers Chapter), you can also participate in events held by other chapters. Windy City Chapter holds events at Road America every May, GingerMan every June, and Grattan every September. If you are looking for more, there are events held by Motor City Chapter at GingerMan and Grattan, Hoosier Chapter at Putnam, Bluegrass Chapter at Putnam, Buckeye Chapter at Putnam and Mid-Ohio, etc etc etc.

I think you are best off starting with autocross to get some seat time, and see how you like the sport.
There are two clubs that run in Milwaukee area
SCCA-Milwaukee --> http://www.scca-milwaukee.org/Solo/solo2.html
-AND-
WAI --> http://www.waiautox.org/
You can look here for classing information:
http://www.scca-milwaukee.org/....html
You need a car in working order, and a drivers license. If you have a helmet bring it along, if not there are loaners available.
Next event is is June 27th at Miller Park.
