steering racks info
It's not that hard (I can only talk about a non-power steering unit), but the factory manual states that you have to drop the shift linkage and it seems that a lot of people have problems with the "bitch" pin.
I recently replaced the rack (with a new factory one) on my 89 Hatchback with B18C. Here are a bunch of tips;
Get the factory manual!
Buy new tie rod bushing "seals", rack seals, and also the lock tabs that go at the end of the rack rod (where the ball joints attach, under the boot / seal). The clamps for all the seals can be re-used.
Remove the tie rod ends from the spindle, remove the cat (at least on mine), remove the steering linkage (from within the car), unbolt the rack from the cross-member, pull the rack bar (within the housing) all the way possible to the passenger side of the car (as if you are steering toward the left), then jocky the thing around until it comes out.
Before you remove the tie rod ends from the assembly, take measurements so that you can install them on the new rack in about the same location. That way you can drive to a shop to have the "toe" set.
