Air Conditioning A/C System Question R12
I got my A/C system up and running in my 89 CRX Si. It was blowing warmish air, so I take it to get recharged and they say that they wont service because its a R12 system. How can I do this myself, or should I just buy a new AC compressor or what? HELP please

they might now have the system for the R12.
most people don't want to deal with R12 because its more expensinve for them I think its 60-80buck a Pound

I think you're being overly harsh.
It DOESN'T cool as well as R-12, but........
A) R134a is not complete garbage.
B) R134a is pretty much the only game in town at this point.
C) You can stick with R-12 and pay 125.00-150.00 for a re-charge.
Or $30.00 for a 134a conversion, and $5 a can for a recharge.

Alot has to do with the a/c components of the car, if its a orginal evaporator that is 15 years old, yes, it will not cool as R12 does. just a matter of opinion,

Either way its going to be expensive, most likely you have a leak, so you'll need to get all your old freon recovered. and recharged again with say r12 which wont be cheap, when doing this you'll need to add dye so that then you can find the leak. once you find the leak youll have to repair the source, and depending on how bad the leak is youll have to recover and recharge again. and doing all this with r12 wont be cheap.
Or yes you can retrofit it with r134a but youll still have to do as said above after you get everything converted over. Just this time it will be with r-134a.
Doing it yourself is not that difficult and I hate to sound like a *** but it is illegal if you practice A/C say in your garage without a licsense. As a techinician I know some people make a big deal at shops about being certified and others dont. Im certified and once you get ceritified you are for life........I dont think you'd have anything to worry about but if anyone every found out then you could be in a world of hurt.........Ive read lots of good ariticles about peopling paying fines up to 25-50k and jail time for doing that, its illegal to vent either r12 or r134a to the atmosphere.

leak detector is around 500 I think the halogen leak detector.
The machine for recharging is around 5-7thousand..
soo u might as well let the shop do it..
a good shop should do r12s

From: hittin corners so hard you can taste my rims..
i'll chime in also..
and yes... 134A is garbage! the R12 will frezze your nuts off any day compared to a 134A system.. and this is in a new car also..
now ive heard, if you change your compressor over to 134a, and instead of adding the R12 spec, and over fill it by 30%, its damn close.. but just buck up, and get it R12 refilled.
when they charge you up, they evac the system, and look for leaks.. they'll tell you if they're is.. and most likley, if its been 5+ years, since you've had it recharged.. you'll be ok. i just had my EG rechanrged with R12, and it was 80 bucks.

its expensive because it damages the environment.
they also want u not to buy it one of the reasons why its expensive..
most older cars don't have running ac systems and when price comes into play they will no buy R12 say a car that needs two lbs or a chevy needs about 6-9 lbs the trucks see how much money it will cost to recharge
hondas take about 1-2lbs not bad if you have a working system keep it r12

i had a 91 4door i had recharged from a friend who has a nice stash of r12 and a mini filling station he brought right to my house. . i think i gave him $40 bucks.... too bad i had a leak and it was gone in 2-3 days.... but it was def FREEZING cold for those 2 days lol
