Default head gasket ???? Did it blow or did the head lift???

Thought I would post a few pics of the head gasket to get some opinions on it. Cant tell if the head lifted, bad gasket, or it just gave out.

Freash built motor, AEBS sleeves, GE 83mm headgasket, AEBS head studs.
Yes, before assembly, the head was surfaced, the block was decked, the head studs were installed per AEBS instructions (10ftlbs on the studs/ 2 step torque to final)

I'm leaning to to the head lifting, but I could be wrong. After initial break in, took the car to the dyno. after about 10 runs (with cool down time) and the boost reaching 18psi, the over flow bottle started spewing and the lower radiator hose started swelling. outside the motor was completely dry.

Going to go ahead get anothe GE headgasket and use some copper spray. Leaning twards the ARP head studs. Just dont feel comfortable re-using the AEBS.

Comments/opinions welcome.

Damn Eric, I didn't realize this happened until after you left today. I guess both of us had bad luck on the dyno today

Truthfully none of us have a clue what was going on. Here's the post Eric. Hopefully you'll have some good insight into it, cause I'm sure as hell lost https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=889813

Do you have 82.5mm pistons ? what is 10ft/lbs 2 step method ? In contrast I use ARP studs with 68 ft/lbs with 10w30 and copper spray. I have had no head sealing issues. I run 1 bar on on a sc61 on 94 octane.

In the pictures its hard to tell, but I didn't see any head gasket failure. Most of the black coating peels off when you take the gasket off.

Any thoughts??

In the pics, you can see that some of the head gasket material has gone missing like it was tore off or burnt off.

Didn't this happen one or two runs before it was pulled off the dyno? But it does look like it maybe lifted and then went by the gasket cause the burn off marks are around portions of three cylinders. Was the motor just put together before you dynoed yesterday? Had it been run previously? I know you were saying it was a new build

We pulled it off the dyno because of the radiator hose swelling. That right there told us there was a problem.

No previous runs the motor had about 50-60 miles on it for the initial break-in.

It only appears to have have gone on the outside edge of #1. the rest og the headgasket looks to be in noemal condition.

It does look like there was something 75% around the stud hole location which made the head not completely seat on cylinder #1. Check Third pic from top... Has to be the problem...

Is it possible anything was interfering from the head when you were clamping down the bolts. Reason I say this is I use stock head bolts on my eclipse and run about 22-25psi boost and have been doing so for 2 years. Can stock head bolts be better than new AEBS studs?

check the head for straightness, i'd have no problems reusing the studs, that is supposedly an advantage to studs is that you can reuse them. anyway, is it possible your dowl pin is too long on that end?

Was thinking the same thing untill I compared it to a new/still in package OEM headgasket an it has the same semi-circle impression on that same location. It honestly looks to have been a bad gasket or the studs stretched.

ARP's have been ordered, just to be safe and a new gasket from GE is on the way. Taking the head over to the machine shop to have it double checked and the block will be double checked this weekend.

oh, by the way, it lifted at 483whp at about 8000rpm. Were not done yet

Your Eclipse is nothing liek a honda so there is no comparason there get that outta your head. Stock honda head bolts suck one u start making power.. </TD></TR></TABLE>

I'm comparing my stockers to AEBS. My stockers should NOT be stronger than them. SO the ones he has should be fine.
