Default question about connecting a subwoofer

I want to add a little bass to my vehicle. My question is, how do I do it?
This is what I have installed. A CD stereo Deck, speakers and Kenwood 2 chanal amp. If I want to connet a subwoofer, How Do I do the connection? Do I have to connect the woofer to the stereo deck first, then wire it back to the amp? need some help.

and ONE important thing, I want a Small but powerful woofer, any recommendation? I heard Infinity got some small ones. any suggestion?

thanks

Is the amp running speakers at the moment? if so you'll need another amp.
Get a professional installation if you are unsure at all.
As for the amp, there are plenty of good quality 10 inch subs around, just find one you like that suits a smaller enclosure

yeah, the amp was connected to 2 polk speakers(maybe woofers, not sure) but I told them out. The original wire connection to the speakers is still in the trunk hanging. Now my is sitting in the trunk.

Ok so you have a spare amp.
You can't leave it hooked up to the two sets of wires in your trunk, you need to bridge the amp to run the sub.

Hook one wire to the positive of the left channel and the other to the negative of the right channel and run these two wires to your sub. You manual will give you better instructions so follow those or get a professional installation. You will also need to set the low pass filter for running your sub.

i think i know the member you're referring to with that last comment and the truth is its a great product that he happened to be selling.

with that said....heres how to get bass in your car.

first thing to do is make a shopping list of what you'll need.

a sub, an amp, some speaker wire, some power wire and ground wire, a small length of wire for the remote turn on, and a pair of RCA cables. You're also going to need a box for the sub and here is where you get to decide whether or not you want to make on yourself of have a shop build one for you. that will depend on your skill with wood, tools available etc.

step 1 bring power to the back of the car.

you mentioned that you've already got a 2 channel amp in your car but unless you had planned on expanding your system its unlikely there will be a distrubution/fuse box back there. if there is thats perfect, simply connect your power wire to one of the free terminals to the amp. If there is no distribution block there you're going to have to come from the battery. if you post which car you have someone could probably tell you exactly how to bring the power wire through the firewall without drilling. One of the most important things to remember when installing any amp or anything electrical for that matter in your car, is to have the correct size fuses and to have these fuses installed within ideally a maximum of 12" from the battery. some people will say 18" which is fine but the idea is to keep the length of unfused wire as short as possible.

step 2: ground the amp

This is probably the easiest step and yet a lot of people seem to have trouble doing it properly. first thing to do is find an appropriate spot to connect the ground wire. Ideally something with a fairly large diameter bolt. I've always used the bolt that holds the rear seats down. make sure you have good metal on metal contact, sand the paint off it is hasnt been done already. some people will use silicon to seal it up so it doesnt rust after but thats up to you. i' havent done that yet and i've had no problems. it should also be noted that the ground wire should be at least the same size if not larger than the power wire.

step 3: remote turn on

this will be an easy step since you have an am installed already. simple connect a wire from the remote turn-on terminal in the 2 channel amp to the remote turn-on terminal on the new amp.

Step 4: getting some form of a signal to the amp

Depending on your HU and whether or not you've got all the fancy features such as low-pass filter settings and sub volume you can either bring a signal from the HU to the new amp or the easier option is to come from the preouts of your 2ch amp into your new amp. if you dont have any preouts on the amp, buy a couple of Y connecters and connect it to the input on both amps.

Step 5: connecting the subs

for this step you'll need to refer to the manual for whatever sub it is you decide to purchase. a SVC sub and a DVC sub will be wired differently.

step 6:test it all.

if you followed the instructions it'll work.

What is your budget for this project?
