Hey everyone. My catalytic converter is rattling, mostly at idle I think. When I get under the car and push on it, it stops rattling, so I tightened my heat shield hoping that would do it, but no luck. Any advice?

 

hmmm..... this is a tuff one. Oh what else??? take the heatshield off. and if the cat problem persists, call the humane society

 

yeah... take heat shield off... make sure all the bolts are tight on both sides... and if u gotta o2 sensor in it.. make sure its tight.

 

Sounds like the inside of your cat is busted. It happened to me before, a big chunk broke inside and it was bouncing around and rattling. Time for a new cat.

 

or if a piece did break off inside... u could just gut it... i found a hydraulic jack handle works good. thats what i did... nothing rattling inside mine.

 

If I gut it out will I throw a code? I have an O2 sensor on my cat... is a stock Honda cat better or an aftermarket. I'm planning on kepping my engine pretty well stock...

 

what's the point of gutting the cat???

Most aftermarket "cats" are essentially metal tubes. Few will pass emissions, the rest will not. From what I hear stock cats are ******* expensive.

well..
-it gave me something to do when i was bored one day...
-makes ur car louder (usually)
-makes ur exhaust less restrictive
-its illegal (i like to break the rules )

 

Just get a used oem cat. They go for about $80. If you are obd2, you have no choice. A straight pipe is great, but gutting the cat is not. If you gut the cat, your car will be louder and will not flow as well as a straight pipe.

$800.00 to be exact. this price is for a 95' civic ex at local honda stealership.

 

I bought a slightly used one for $80 (obd2). My friend bought one for $50(obd1). We got them from the Recycler.

 

I took the cat off and had some sort of metal cylinder thing in it... I have no Idea what it is or where it came from, but problem solved, thanks everyone...
