cat is broken?
i don't have money right now and i have come to a conclusion that my cat is broken, can i break out all the honeycomb innerds and run a o2 sensor defouler?
right now my car smells horrid (mostly on cold), it rattles, and i believe flow and mpg is being impeded because of the broken cat...
so what is input on breaking the honeycombs out and running a o2 sensor defouler? will it run better etc above?

I've got nearly the same issue, and when I jacked the car up to take a look I found the hardware that bolts the cat to the cat-back is fused/rusted into something that is going to need to be cut/ground off. At that point, if I'm paying labor at a shop to get the damn thing off, it makes sense to just have them replace it with a new cat.
A gutted cat will flow WORSE than a working cat, you're better off running a testpipe, but then you are likely not legal depending on local laws. Price out a universal cat and install price would be my advice, and go from there.

I have ran a few vehicles without cats and I would not recomend it. You car needs the backpressure to run right. Every car that I did this to started to burn oil within a few thousand miles.
Untill you get the money to fix the issue..
Take the cat off.. use a big flat head and beat all the honey comb out of the cat and clean it out really good.. install it back on car..
It's gonna be loud and nasty..
But should temp fix your problem.. that is if you do not have emissions in your state

Absolutely do not do this. I'm not trying to bash you down, but your engine, like stated above, needs back pressure and uses back pressure.
In a literal sense, when it uses back pressure, it pushes anything loose in your exhaust system right back to your engine. It may not get in because of the valves, but why would you chance getting a bunch of **** from your cat stuck in your exhaust valves?
Think about it, okay? Again, I'm sorry, I don't mean to bash you down but this is a horrible idea.

It is a temporary fix.. although it's not environment friendly either, but still some people do this.. It would be a temp fix.
The term ''gutting'' the cat means.. completely removing everything inside the converter.. So there is nothing left in it..
As for backpressure yes it is possible to loose as well as HP/TQ.. again thats the effects of a temp fix.

not to be rude but i have had my cat punched and am running a home maid canister on mine that has no baffles my car is running fine not buring oil and i have got 264000miles on it origanel motor so in my opinion if you have less miles then me and your motor did not have the living **** beat out of it you should be ok but as far as punching that thing i would not do that if i where you instead i would buy an ebay test pipe and take your cat to a recycling center they will give you anywhere from 100-250 for your cat cause they have platinum in them so recycling the old one can pay for the new one see what i am sayin

it is nation wide also call up the center and ask the guy if he can tell you how much he would give you for your cat you will need to tell him year make model possibly weather or not 2/4door and if it is ls or gsr am not sure if they need the last 2 pieces of info but when you cash it in let me know what you get for it out there cause i handed one in out here and got 175 for it

I understand that, and again, I don't mean to put any hot water between us...
Basically, what I'm saying is, most people that gut the cat don't do the job well enough and think its clean, but there's still junk inside... that all

that is true alot of people punch there cat and alot of the just find something like a ball bat that fits and shove it threw and when the stuff falls out they think they are done which normally leads to clogged resonator or other part of exhaust that is why i use a big foot long screwdriver
