what is the rubber plug next to the vtec solenoid???
I just got my motor the other day from hmotors and that plug just to the right of the vtec solenoid and left of the front camshaft is leaking oil. It looks like someone put some rtv around it but it still is leaking.. Anyone know what part that is and what motor to get it off of?
It looks like a rubber plug about 1.5" in diameter, how do I get it out (you can get at it direct by pulling the vtec assembly off) and what motor do I get a new one from?
Its a b16a1

It's the exhaust cam plug seal. You must take off the valve cover and lift out the ex cam and the cam caps to replace it.
Buy a new one from Honda, $6 or $7.00- Get a P72, with the O-ring, not a P30.

NO, you have to take everything off... you can take teh valvecover off, and take off the last 3 exhaust caps and try and put it in there. if you do it careful then you dont have to redo the cam gears.

Dat be it.
But that's a P30 in the diagram, you want a P72. Better design.

Over-priced in my opinion. And they leak too.

i'm going to throw some rtv on there too, hopefully that'll take car of it permanently.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I wish you luck, but they ALL leak eventually. They're only good for about 2-3 years at best. Just sell your car before then.

I have used STR cam seals with no problems yet.

If you get the plastic one from honda and use hondabond around the edge it won't leak. You also don't have to take out the cam.
1. unbolt valve cover
2. unbolt Vtec solenoid
3. unbolt cam cap cover
4. unbolt left furthest cam cap
5. pull out old rubber seal
6. clean dirty area with a degreaser if you like to have a clean motor.
7. Also clean area around the seal
8. put hondabond or equivalent sealer on cam cap, top and bottom.
9. replace rubber seal with new plastic one from honda.
10. place cam cap into position
11. install cam cap cover and torque down to spec
12. reinstall vtec solenoid ( I also replaced the seal and filter inside solenoid)
13 install valve cover.
I did this about 4 months ago and I have yet to see any oil around that area.

When isnt OEM the best option? Cuz im pretty sure I can build a kickass setup B18a block B16 pistons and rings LS rods, B16 head w/ welded chambers P73 intake and exhaust manifold, P72 cams and cam gears. OEM P72 oil pump, water pump and can't forget those OEM gaskets! I can build this setup on a budget that a homeless person can afford. A similar setup using aftermarket parts would probably run double the cost and may not be as reliable.
When it comes to seats and suspension and brakes, yeah aftermarket parts can be considered a better option for cheaper. 1 thing I can say about OEM parts...They fit and they work, so for those 2 reasons, I am all up on honda of north americas nuttttz!
