ohh, ok.. 96 civic hatchback.. well is it totally stock now... ?
if so, the biggest thing you can do asap is lower it. It is a must, it's not a big deal, and you can do it yourself. Its very simple, some bolts, and a simple process anyone can understand with little to no common sense.
Second, lets look into what you like about driving, if you just go for looks like most people here then simply work on what you like. a front lip.. great.. buy one, match it to your car year, 96-98 and put it on. Want some performance like you say.. plently can be done. Basic bolt ons, air intake, header, and exhaust is a good start.
On the fact of the auto.. most people on honda-tech are all talk and don't know too much, an auto can be fine, for your power, <300 you can make good use of an auto tranny. A lot of companys sell re-build disc kits which should hold up to 400whp range.. and be VERY effective on the street.
enjoy.. msg me if you want some more info..

Like this ^ guy. Just start reading all of the links that jL iLLuZiOnz 9 gave you. The number 1 thing to do is RESEARCH. Also, it's not just about lowering it. You can lower it and have a **** *** suspension setup and you can also barely lower it and have a kick *** suspension setup. If you go over 2 inches it's possible to start damaging your suspension. But yes, the best way to start is with suspension, including wheels and tires. May I recommend Tokico Illuminas with Tokico springs. I've had them on for a couple days and the setup rocks. But my car only lowered 1.75". $470 shipped on ebay from jdmwerks. Happy tuning

Have love for the d series auto just dont junk it it an go straight to a swap especially if you dont know what your getting into. Levelten.com and a few other sites make good replacment torque converters and tranny set ups for the d series. Just don expect to get near the 400hp range with a auto. But they are fun for launching. For a daily driver your gonna love your car to death with how gas prices are rising. Just search up on topics your interested in. You can im me if ya want as i have now owned 3 96-00 civic hatchs.

What companies? Name them. I can only think of one company, Level 10, that does any automatic Honda transmission upgrades and as far as I know they mostly do Accords for now.
Please tell us since most of here "don't know ****" bro.

That's you choice then, and don't blame it on the people in this topic for not spoon feeding you information when there is so much to be had here on H-T already.
Start here with the reading:

That is an FAQ (frequently asked questions) topic devoted to giving links to very nice topics about all sorts of great subjects concerning different aspects of performance, routine maintenance, looks, etc.
As far as your car goes, IMO you need to ditch the automatic tranny if you want to get real with power and performance. Sure one company might make a limited array of parts for the Civic slushbox, but the amount of money you 'll spend trying to bulletprof that auto could be applied towards a nice EX 5-speed tranny, pedal assembly, and clutch hydrolics.
You can mod your SOHC to make decent power, but the bottom line is the swaps have more potential - period.
You can build your SOHC N/A which would probably warrant a VTEC head swap, higher CR pistons, good headwork, and a nice cam, but it would still only be not much quicker than the average i/h/e B16A swap and it would not be as quick as the 1.8L VTEC swaps. Take it from me since I have a semi-built 11:1CR D16A6 with a close ratio 5-speed tranny, a B16A2 swap, and aB18C5 swap all currently residing in hatches in my driveway. The D16A6 can beat the B16A2 swapped hatch on occasion, but only due to driver differences and weight being higher on the chassis that the B16A2 is in.
You can boost your SOHC and make more hp for cheaper than the average B18B (LS) or B16A swaps, but the boosted SOHC will never be as realible as the stockish DOHC - period. Safe boost levels on the stock SOHC would be about 8psi with 10psi being about the most you'd want to go even with good tuning. If you want a true swap killer you'll probably want to build the D series for boost, which will make it more expensive than some swaps, but it will make more power and be more reliable than boosting a stock engine provided you get a good engine management system and have it tuned.
The very bottom line is that it is YOUR car. Everything you want to know is on this website, but only you can know what you want and then do various searches on different topics. The FAQ is a good start.
Topics like these are a dime a dozen unfortunately, and we see so many of them here and are frustrated by the same exact questions that we often forget that a real person is behind each one of the topics. I understand that each person wants very specific, personalized information, but if you read most replies they are very general - including this one.
thanx guys... the first thing i'm going to do to it is drop it... than after that just pretty much basic stuff, cause i'm not trying to make big hp out of this car, i have another car for that already...
