Default JDM OR USDM? (pretty sure i've been ripped off , what do you think?)

just like in the title... is a d16y7 JDM or USDM? What car is it from? what are the specs? the one i got was "alegedly" from a 98 JDM EX but ive heard a lot of different things (i was once told that it was really from a DX) and now i feel like i was totally ripped off ( paid 1625 for the swap) and was promissed alot of things ( clean fuel injector /s, steam clean engine bay amongst other things) and aparently all they did was swap the engine ( they didnt even change the timing belt or anything)

anyways i'm in the bay area and maybe the price was o.k ( cause of the economy here) but ive been to other shops and theve said they would have done it for alot cheaper (around 1200 and it would have had VTEC)

i just wanna know if ive been lied to, and if i should go throw a fit in front of them ( since i had a lot of trust in them and I dont even go hang out there since i dont know how to act around them)

thanks for any help and pls. tell me what u think

So who did the swap? Was it Speed Image? I had a similar bad experience with Speed Image and was quoted for a D16Y8 for something over $3k. Heoooowl no. I couldn't believe those guys.

You might want to look into filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Most JDM engines don't have a numerical code on the end. Its usually d15b, b16a, b18c, etc

you sure have a lot of money to throw around. that's from a dx man. i wouldnt pay that much money for a d-series engine. a jdm d15b w/ vtec is $300, even a d16y8 (yeah it's vtec too!) would cost you $800 at the most. file a complaint against them thru better business bureau get your money back. tell us what company it is when you can, that way you'll save some people around the bay who don't know their honda.

This should be a cautionary tale to everyone that you should ask these questions BEFORE you hand your money over to someone. Sorry to hear you got ripped.

Yeah the d16y8 is teh civic ex motor (sohc vtec) the y7 came from the non vtec models like the DX. and yeah that motor is a waste of time. A d16a6 would probably be better then that eninge.

I agree he paid a bit too much. . . but just to clarify. . .Did you pay that much for the motor? Or for the motor and installation? Cuz it looks like a few of these guys here are under the impression that you paid that much just for the motor.

Ahh man sorry to hear that man. Post the company name so you can save us people from buying from them. BTW, knowledge = power. Do some research before you have people drop in different parts into your car.

I'm sure whatever shop did it provided a receipt of sorts right? if not I would make sure you get one from them stating that it's from a JDM EX....

being that it is not then they sold you something under false pretenses which is in essence illegal.

I would then present this to the Department of Consumer Affairs who will help you to receive a refund.

They are actually very good, although timely in helping you. You can present your complaint to the shop and tell them that they can either resolve the issue out of court or deal with Consumer affairs.

I guarantee in saving their own reputation and future business they meet your demands. But do this now!!

sorry to hear that... they saw you coming though...

you need to take immediate action and confront them. you've been had and they know that...now stick it to them and make them pay. confront them in a sane non threatening manor and tell them what you want try to make a deal if they don't want to deal with you take it to a judge and let them know you are going to take legal action.

The D16Y7 is just a 1996-2000 DX/LX motor. Stock, it puts out 107HP, 102ft-lb torque. If this sounds familiar, there is a reason for it. This motor is basically just a newer version of the D16A6. These motors go for next to nothing and can sometimes be picked up for free. They also drop right in with no hassle and can use your existing transmission, fuel, and electrical system. In other words, you could have done this swap yourself basically for pennies! You seriously got ripped off. In fact, you might want to talk to an attorney. These folks who did the swap directly misrepresented the motor. And I would seriously consider small claims court. If you have a receipt that says 'JDM EX motor', you have them right where you want them!

Good luck man. You probably won't get any of your money back though at least not by confronting them
