Default engine rebuild and synthetic oil?

Is it safe to run (break-in period and beyond) Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 on a rebuilt H22A engine? Piston rings, main/rod bearings and oil pump were all replaced.

Thanks,
Mark

Probably want to switch to synthetic after the break in period.

is it even worth running synthetic oil? from what i know, on Honda motors, the setiments from using normal oil help keep good seals in the motor, but synthetic tends to break them down...

That is an interesting point. Anyone else agree with this? Has anyone switched to synthetic and had oil leakage problems?

Thanks,
Mark

also, every single auto mechanic i have asked the synthetic v. normal oil question about has vehemently discouraged the use of synthetic... i'm sure you ask around, and you all will find the same result. i've been using 5W-30 (just as the car manual says) for all 80K miles, and even after having NOS on the car since 55K miles, and running the car hard, i rarely burn any oil, and have never experienced any leaks (except for the spark plug housing ring seal)... but that's just my personal experience...

I agree with DunReit. I believe that Synthetic is pretty much the same as regular oil. However, I do like the fact that it is safer to the enviornment and stays clean looking, rather then getting black after 50 miles.

I have heard many people say it is better to run break in period with regular/conventional oil. But, talk is cheap.

You are talking to the wrong mechanics.

Synthetic takes a lot more time to break down and provides much better lubrication. Synthetic is especially desirable in turbo charged engines because of its extremely high coking temperature.

I ran for ~30k on conventional and then switched to synthetic for ~45k now and I have never had a consumption / leaking problem. With any oil CHANGING is the key!!

Never heard a mechanic talk bad about synthetic. It can cause older engines to sprout some leaks though. It cleans out all the old oil deposits inside your engine, and sometimes it makes the seals leak. I would not use it if it causes leaks, but otherwise, it's great stuff. It has a higher viscosity(big word). Basically, it can handle much more heat before it breaks down.

yeah for the first 1000 miles use a heavy weight oil. To keep the seals really stong.
Also make sure to watch for the oil filter and engine temp. Lots of friction when breking in an engine. Plus lots of sediments from the air have been in your car, and are now working their way out. So keep a close eye on it all.
