Default Can running lean damage rings???

I bought a used shortblock that was in good condition. I installed my ported and milled head plus all the boltons but I left stock fueling for a couple of days. I ran lean until I upped the fuel press with a reg someone lent me, now smoke is coming out of my exhaust, could running lean (I heard no detonation) be the cause of this? Will I need new oversize pistons or willa re-ring suffice???

thanks
