First Time At The Track... Need Practice...
Yesterday was my first time at the track, and I have ZERO launching experience. Is there any way to figure out what my times SHOULD be once I get launching down? Since my car hasn't been tuned yet and I think I'm running pretty rich in the higher rpm's, I decided to run it the same as I drive it every day so I know what I can do on the street. Full interior, spare tire (heavy *** 16) toolbox etc. in the trunk, kumho ecsta supra 712's on 16" slipstreams at 45 psi...
97 JDM ITR, Apex'i WS exhaust, cheap *** short ram intake, rechipped p28, untuned VAFC.
1st Run against (i think) an LS teg.
my Reaction 1.206 his .719

my 1/4 15.393 @ 90.11 his 16.296 @ 88.16
2nd Run I was up against a celica that is owned by a cook at a restaurant I used to work at. He was always raggin' on me because he didn't think I was serious when I told him I was getting a type r motor. Still beat him even with a junk launch though
reaction 1.556 his .779
my 60 ft. 2.585 his 2.703
my 330 6.799 his 6.993

We only ended up getting 2 qualifying runs because some jackass in a dual exhaust 'teg broke his tranny and leaked oil all over the track, so I dialed in at 15.3 figuring that I could only get better, and I'd try a little different technique with my launch so I wouldn't spin so much... Also I was told to start when the last amber bulb goes, and it helped a lot...
3rd run the other guy got a "run aborted" cause his tree didn't go.
my reaction .618

my 594 ET. 9.384

4th run I was getting dizzy as hell from wearing a helmet, it was already 11:15 at night, and I wanted to go home. I'd been at the track for 7 hours and it was only my 4th run, so I decided to shift out of first early and just aim for a good r/t and 60 foot... Up against an 87 rx7 who thinks his car is amazing... He actually challenged the guy who does my bodywork's monte carlo for 300 bucks on the street a while ago... 560 hp monte carlo with a 200 shot of nitrous... Ran, got destroyed, and patrick (the monte carlo's owner) told him to put the 300 bucks into his engine and come back afterwards... Dialed in a 15.89 and makes fun of monte carlos... Anyways, the race.

Yeah, I can't launch for crap. What do you guys think I can do to help out those 60 foots? I'm not getting 712's again when these die, probably going for azenis or proxes... And is there any way to figure out what I'd be getting with a 2.2 or 2.1 60 foot? I know I can do it with more seat time, but it's gonna be a month before I get the chance to run at the track, and tips are MORE than welcome...

I'm getting it tuned within the week. Didn't get the chance to, cuz there's only ONE shop on the entire island of maui with a dyno, and they were booked solid. There were 62 cars in the import class...
I'm pretty sure it's due to my crappy launching, and I kept spinning at the start of second for about a quarter second...

I was launching at 3K, and it wasn't grabbing hard for a good half second...
The 2.7 60' was a 2001 celica GTS with i/h/e and SAFC tuned on 18's...
I left in the spare/toolbox because I wanted to find out what I run on the street, since I knew I wasn't going to do great since I'm running rich.
Basically, I wanted launch practice and to see what I can manage off the line. My buddy took video, but the tape snapped, so he's working on fixing it...
I figure that next time (since I'll be tuned) I'll empty the trunk, take out rear/pass seats, drop psi from 45 to about 35 and see what that does for me...

First 2 runs I was dropping and flooring.
3rd run I tried to let the clutch grab about half then let go once it stopped spinning.
4th run I dropped the clutch and pushed the gas to about 50 percent then punched once i got traction... If I'd realized the guy I ran against 4th was gonna go over his dial in I would've gone full tilt and tried my 5th run with no launch...
On a funny note, there was a guy in a blue celica who actually forgot to take it out of reverse after staging... Launched most of the way back to the water...

I never understand how this could happen but my cousin did it in his 1970 442 about 20 years ago...funny stuff
.
Aight man practice this. Get your rpms around 5500 and let the clutch out slowly. Once you feel it start to grip feather the clutch and gas till your taking off with as little tire spin as possible. Some tire spin is great but not the whole smoking the tires off the line thing. Its really hard to explain. But the analogy is like when you learn to drive a stick but for a different reason.
I try to launch my b18c-r engine like this and Im in vtec pretty much right out of the hole. Remember its hard on a clutch but works great.
BTW you got any newer pics of that paint job? Im sure its been buffed by now.

I'll give it a chance... But with these damn 712's I'm not expecting much. Should I even bother practicing launching at 5500 without droppin the psi?
And it still hasn't been buffed... It's literally raining every other day. I may end up taking it to a shop to have it done instead of waiting for the guy who painted it...
