How long did your stock clutch last?
I bought my car used with 114k, I think with the original clutch. It's a 93 S. Now it has 145k on it, and I'm wondering if I should take "pre-emptive" action and ditch it before it dies. Am I being paranoid? Also, can you get home on a clutch that's losing it?

well it would not hurt to have a "spare" sitting in the closet. You know that it WILL need to be replaced at SOME point. The OEM replacement is not that expencive. I say get one and sit on it.
I have 110k on my 97, and i will be ordering a spare soon to change when the stocker finnaly gives out.

156K miles and it almost caused me to get stuck somewhere at night.
If I were you, I would get it changed. Either way, you are going to have to get it changed. The question it, do you want to get stuck somewhere, be inconvenienced, pay for towing, be forced into getting the clutch changed that the shop the car is towed to,......well, I am sure you get the idea.
I would buy a new clutch and have a shop of your choice change it for you.

you should wait that long, i'm just a little poor and lazy

It's even possible to shift with out any clutch at all... that of course is not preferable... or easy.

197k on my original 91 lude clutch. the last couple wks before it died you could hear the rivets on it grinding. of course i replaced it at 197k .. then when i hit 201k a cylinder went.

Yeah, I've done a little of that. It works best between 3rd and 4th. The other gears are - (grrrrind) - iffy.
My roommate's clutch pedal on his busted-*** 88 Jetta fell off once. He had to clutchless shift all the way home.

How do you shift without a clutch? Just jam it in gear?
Also don't worry about getting stranded. Mine slipped for about a month before it totally went. And it could still take a beating in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

You have to get the engine rpms going at the same speed as the tranny, putting gentle pressure on the shift **** towards the gear you are trying to get in. It will actually slip in quite nicely, if you keep it steady... although it's tough to get started from a stop.

i took it to 4k and then leaned it on the next gear, as i let off the gas, it will slip in. you cant do this w/bad clutch cause it doesnt grip. this is only for master/slave cylinder going out.
