98 ex auto to 5sp swap question PLEASE HELP
i swapped my automatic tranny for a 5sp one sometime ago on my 98 EX
we took a 5sp tranny from a 97EX...everything is perfect
but one problem...we left the automatic ECU
this makes my car throw a check engine light...specifically the salenoid and lock-up codes are being thrown causing my car to fail Illinois emissions which are really hard on OBD2 cars...one code even will result in an automatic fail
so...my question is...will replacing my current auto EX ecu for a 96-98 manual ex ECU be enough??
i asked some ppl and they tell me that i need to also get the intake manifold and IAC valve from a manual 96-98EX...but i just dont understand why that's necessary
are they right? or will i be fine with just pluggin' in the manual ecu
thanx!!

This is my experience from an Integra.....but no, you should be fine.
Just swap in the manual ECU and you should be fine. You're getting that Automatic Shift Solenoid code, right? Code P1660 "A/T-FI Data Line Failure/TCM - ECM Halt" right?
That's the only one I had when I swapped my tranny in my 1997 Integra LS. No other codes came up. The car drove fine. Even after extensive modifications afterwards, everything was still fine.

thanx man, appreciate the reply
so i'll juss get the manual ECU
as for the code, yeah i threw a similar shift salenoid code, but it also threw a torque lock-up convertor code of some sort, but oh well doesn't matter
i'm pretty confident that both will disappear with the manual ecu change
thanx again man~!!

No problem. Glad to see everything worked out well for the swap.
You'll love your car even more now.
Anyway, if you want to really make things easy, why don't you just remove the light bulb from your cluster? Then just put it back later, or not even put it back at all.
That's what I did. Those codes aren't going to damage your car in any way. The only disadvantage is the fact that you won't see other codes come up afterwards if you decide to modify your car more.
Eh....I dunno, I'm just ranting. Just get the damn manual ECU I guess.

LOL...i DID remove the bulb...but Illinois puts some sort of OBD2 scanner on your car...so even without the CEL lighitng up...the emissions ppl still know wut code your car is throwing...
and as a matter of fact, it's noted in my "failed" results that my check engine light does not operate properly...also another cause for failing if the tester is a REAL fugger
as for my ecu issue...i still have to figure some stuff out...i managed to hunt down a 96-98 manual ex ecu...but after lookin' into it more, i'll still have issues...
my current codes will disappear, but i will in fact throw another code related to the IAC valve...apparently, 96-00 NON-vtec (HX/LX/DX) as well 96-00 AUTOMAIC Exs use a 3 wire IACV plug while the 96-00 EX 5spds use a 2 wire iacv plug...so actually, not only will i throw a code, my car will most likely idle really funky...
i found out what i need to do with the plugs to make this work, however, thats only a part of the solution...i also need the manual EX's iac valve...which will not fit in the auto intake manifold...thus meaning, i will need the manual EX's intake manifold as well...OR...if i could hunt down the engine harness from a 96-00 EX 5sp, i could avoid all that...supposedly...AM I RIGHT ABOUT THIS??
thanx
any help/suggestions is appreciated

Just get the 5-speed throttle body, the 5-speed manifold and a the 2-wire IACV. You'll then need a 2-wire connector to graft onto your existing 3-wire IACV connector, move a pin at the ECU and you should be mint.
