On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to wire in an alarm
hey guys,
i'm gonna buy an alarm this week, either viper or clifford. i was just wondering how hard it would be to wire myself. i have a little electrical understanding, and i've wired in my stereo. how hard is it, 1-10?
thx

depends on the quality of the job you want to do.. sure anyone can find a wire that matches a pieice of paper and connect it right.. but can they do it in a way that at theif would not know what wire is what??? i could say its a 7 or so on the scale.. an alarm is only as it is installed...
installing it and making it work is just tedious...not really hard. As suggested above, the hard part is making it look like it isn't there.
ive never installed an alarm but ive ripped out probably a 100 already from hondas,
ive noticed alot of the installers do a crappy job, to do a neat job may take a while,
from the looks of it, i would give it a 6-7 on the difficulty meter depending on how good u are with wires,
make sure u have a good hand held light, because under the dashboard is dark, ur basic screw drivers, a small blade, wire strippers ( i like the one that u can get from crutchfeild, or other local stores, it has the different guages of wires to strip on the side, along with a part to crimp wires. wire connecters and some electric tape....
u may have to cut a kinda thick black and white wire, which cuts off power to either the starter or ignition, i dont remember which one

And the model and amount of sensors / accessories. The last one I did was about 70 connections that needed to be made. Each of those wires needed to be ran, the brain hidden (removal of dash) sensors hidden (removal of various body peices.)
To do a good job for a top of the line model, it takes a good weekend to install. For a base model with no sensors or accessories, maybe a couple of hours. You should get a helms if you don't have one for the wiring diagrams also.

Depends on who you ask, to me it would be a 1 to others it would probably be a 10 if you take the mean of that you get 7 so you answered your own question.

its an 8. u really have to know what you are doing. i let a professinal do my 2 way page alarm. it took them 3 hours. and they did a crappy job. so, i just took my time to make it look better by hiding the brain at a better place, strap the sensor to the steeringwheel column where it should be and then zip tied the wires nice and neat.
i also use electrical tape to wrap a couple of wires to make it harder to distinguish it.
everything was nice and neat and well hidden.
thats what i recommend u to do.
let someone else install it, and just clean it up after they are done.
but if u did what i did, it will be harder to fix the problem if anything ever happends to the alarm in the future. cause of all that electrical tape and zip ties.
i zip tied a couple of wires to some metal frame to maker it harder to pull out.
stuff like that.

thx for the responses guys
the car it's going into is a 92 dx hatch. i'll probably be getting a 2way alarm made by either clifford or viper because my friend works at best buy and can get them cheap
i had circuit city install a viper 790 on my old car (an eclipse) and they were done in 2 hrs. i looked and it was such a crappy job so i taped up some wires and made it look less noticeable.
i think i'll be able to do it myself. based on your responses i figure that it'll take me all of sat and sun to do. i'll be taking the dash out to make it way cleaner.
any other suggestions?

ive installed many alarms on hondas before.. its really not nessescary to remove the dash to install the alarm in your particlure car..
i would remove the lower dash cover, knee bolster, drop the fuse box, and you should be good to have plenty of room to get it high in the dash as you want.. there are a some more things ill PM you with so its not posted here.. take your time, have the wires looking neat when you go to install it.. meaning use a drill and spin wires that are going to the same place so they are neat..
