Default JDM Final drive

My question is one that has been asked sort of sheepishly. I'm looking to do the JDM Final Drive along with Toda flywheel and street clutch on my daily diven R. My question is, if use the GSR 5th gear would a high RPMed 4th to 5th shift drop me out of VTEC? I've been told that the ratio remains the same as the stock USDM gearing; therefore, keeping me in VTEC on the 4-5 shift. I keep reading that there is a big drop in RPMs with this setup. Is the drop enough to drop me out of VTEC when racing on the 4-5 shift? I do enough highway driving for the 4-500 rpm increase to become annoying in 5th gear on the verge of VTEC "engaging". Thanks

It won't be that dramatic man. GSR fifth gear, you'll be fine.

If you're going to go that route then why not get the GSR 4th gear and end up with a true JDM tranny?

I'd like the the best acceleration for the price. Yet I'd also like to have the semblence of an overdrive. I don't want to sit on the verge of VTEC engagement while cruising. But would like to have the quick jump by dropping it down into 4th gear and mashing the pedal. I'm not a JDM nut. I gain nothing by copying the JDM tranny and alternatively installing the GSR 4th and 5th, yet will lose about an additional $100 for the GSR 4th gear.

I'm going w/ the same setup, but keeping all stock ITR gearing, just changing the FD and going w/ the Toda clutch and fly....

Well then break it out and rub me down with it. But can anyone answer if a high RPMed 4th gear shift into 5th will drop me out of VTEC?

My gut tells me that you wont drop out of VTEC with this setup. If my memory serves me correctly the stock gearing (1-5) will bring the RPM down to ~6300RPM with the 4th-5th shift. Since the JDM FD changes things by 10% and the GSR 5th essentially brings things back to normal I would expect that with your setup the drop would put you around 5670RPM and still in VTEC.

But I have to agree with D, the GSR 5th is not the way to go. The TypeR was never meant to be civilized!

Oh, and if you actualy drive the speed limit you wont have to worry about getting close to VTEC because the RPM will be closer to 4500RPM then 5500RPM.

IPS Racing. I've seen prices to ba around 475. You can always try to talk them down. But demand is high right now and I'm not sure you'll be successful. It also depends how much you are ordering or your previous history with the company. There are alot of guys on this forum that sell JDM parts. Goodspeed, RandD motorsports, IPS racing.

Are you doing the install yourself? I don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but I'm sure that Asspenny and myself would be more than willing to help you out, as we are going to have to tackle this too in the coming weeks (if we can find the parts now)

I don't know what kind of tools you have, but I have some that may help you out and we will also be purchasing some of the other tools we need to finish the job too. Get in touch w/ us one of these days if you want to hang out sometime...we may be doing somethings tonight if you are interested in stopping by for some car chit chat and definitely some

3rd 1.269 -----1.360
4th 0.966 -----1.034 (= euro/jdm R`s)
5th 0.714 -----0.787 (= euro/jdm R`s)

Type R:
USDM tranny:
1st 70.84 kmh...........44 mph
2nd 99.82 kmh...........62 mph
3rd 141.68 kmh..........88 mph
4th 196.42 kmh..........122 mph
5th? 257-265 kmh........160-165 mph

JDM in mph:
1st: 36.02 mph..........58 kmh
2nd: 55.9 mph...........90 kmh
3rd: 80.75 mph..........130 kmh

I am getting mine at IPS Racing. Mike is a good guy to deal with. Had reallly good impressions thus far. He was the first one i called and he said he could get me one (but it would take several days). So i am getting the Toda clutch along with it. And yes i am a ***** getting the GS-R 5th gear as well!

Mike <---hasn't had enough to drink yet tonight
