Default JDM final drive?

Well I am wanting to know the answers to a couple of questions

1. What are the MPH in each gear at 8400rpm in each gear (mph at shift point)
2. How much of a good thing is the final drive (is it worth it)
3. besides dropping your ET's how much better is it in a road coarse track day.
4. What is a good price and how has them in stock

If I decide to get it I will be putting in a GSR 5th for gas milage (drive 90% highway) with the GSR 5th does the topspeed increase from the 120 since the final drive drops top speed or does it simple drop RPM's to almost stock 5th gear with US final drive.

Any help would be great and if you have pros' and cons to the final drive you input is wanted as well.

Thanks CHRIS

5th gear(.787) RPM with the 4.785fd is the same as 5th gear(.848) RPM with the 4.400fd

Ahhh, nowwwwww I get it!

Now that I understand, it brought a new analogy to mind. Rear wheel drive cars have a transmission and a rear differential, and front wheel drive has both of these components built into one unit. Changing 'final drive' gearing in a front wheel drive car is the same as changing gearing in the 'rear' of a rear wheel drive.

That is what I am hoping as i hate it when sometimes you dont get in a corner correct or the coarse is not set up for your storck 4.40 final drive. Looking for a more powerfull bottom end that gets up quick so I am getting mine today at JDMhondaparts.com for $450 is that a good deal they price match so if anybody can tell me where I can get it cheaper hit up this topic or IM me as I am leaving in couple of hours to go there and they will price match

If you're planning on putting it on an Si, you will need a differential from some kind of B18C-style tranny. The B16-style differential is smaller, and will not fit the JDM ring gear.

I don't have an ITR, but my best friend does and I have ridden/driven in his car enough to give some imput. I noticed a HUGE difference when my friend installed his final drive. You go through the gears a lot quicker, and it hits VTEC almost immediately IMO, as opposed to waiting a tad longer.

1) The mph are what that link said they were.
2) I think it is worth it and I believe my friend would say so as well.
3) It is MUCH better on a roadcourse. My friend just recently tracked his car and it really makes a difference. Although my friend has a lot more mods done than just the JDM final drive it accelerates quicker. I rode about 50 mins in another Type R with just intake and it felt as though it was taking FOREVER to hit VTEC in each gear after sharp turns, whereas in the R with final drive it almost felt as though you never left it. Howerever, my friend does have his VTEC point lowered to 5,200 instead of 5,800. Still, it is worth it IMO. The only thing you might get tired of in this combo is shifting so much so soon.

underrated99si, I hope you don't mind me asking a question in your post, but here goes.....

'94 GS-R (CTRs, VAFC, 4800 VTEC xover) for me..... what's a better idea?

1. Stay with my GS-R trans (possible rebuild with new synchros and anything else that is worn) and get a ATS FD?

2. Get a new ITR trans and JDM FD? I just think ITR trans with ATS FD is overkill.

Thanks to anyone that can help! -Aaron

remember, ITR trans=LSD, i'd rather have a ITR w/ JDM FD than a GSR w/ ATS FD. but thats just me

True, I have not. I guess I just want my revs to be at a sensible level at 75-90mph on the freeway. But, ****, 4.785 and 4.929 isn't that huge of a gap. Asspipe, what's the diff in price? If I remember right, JDM FD is ~$725.

ATS is 750-775

I have an ATS for sale if you're interested

Duh, I thought ATS was more than that. I need to spend $700 on my ABS and body rot issues first. I was thinking of trans rebuild or new ITR trans with some FD next spring. Thanks for the help, though.

Stock ITR tranny @80 in 5th =~ 4500
ATS FD in ITR tranny @80 in 5ht =~5000

Not a big deal, just makes a little more noise. Your still not in vtec and I have even noticed better gas millage due to less engine load while keeping the car in 5th around town. I dunno, I love it.

It has helped me sooooo much accelerating in a straight line, as well as corner exit, and especially at autox. I give it and will never go back to the mass consumer toned down usdm final drive.....
